Black pour with a khaki head. Somewhat sour up front. Definite acidity and lots of roasted malt and coffee. A bit of earthy hops, some blueberry, and a hint of metal. Flavor is moderately tart. Blueberries, earthy hops, lots of roasted malt, and coffee. A touch of coffee, some mild bitterness, and a light lemon zest note on the finish.

Draft at Flavor. Deepest brown with large, sudsy tan head. Roasty and vinyl dominate the nose with a bit of dusty brett. Flavors go immediately to the phenolic side, but mellow back into a more interesting sour thing. Carbonation is on the high side, but as the beer warms everything is more in place. Very dry, very bretty, slightly tart are the watchwords here.

On tap at City Beer (Sour Mash Black Ale was the mentioned style). Pours with a black body and a huge tan head. Aroma was roasty, bready, lightly sour and caramel. Flavor was roasty, nutshells, lightly sour, vinous. Lively bubbles with a dry mouthfeel.

On tap at City Beer, SF. Some confusion over the style designation has ultimately been clarified by several raters and by CB. So yeah, not at all the Schwarz you’re thinking of. Pours a deep murky brown, with faint carbonation and a thick consistency. Nose ripe, semi-tart coffee bean, deep chocolate, malts, and yes, sour mash. Body is medium, with more carbonation than is visually apparent. Tart flavors have the edge on the dry baker’s choc. Interesting and quite quirky take.

On tap. Pours an opaque black with a creamy beige head. Hard roasted malt in the nose, a whiff of vitamins and diacetyl. Medium-bodied, hard roasted malts, distinctly metallic, a light tartness (presumably brewed with a sour mash), ashy notes and a dry finish. 130611
