UPDATED: NOV 24, 2006 Rating #1 Tap hand pulled (7 5 8 4 17). Deep brown with a lush rich roasted malt falvor with a long aftertaste. Some vinous qualities. Rating #2 Tap @ Toronado on 11/22/06 (6 3 8 4 16). Dark brown color with a tan head. An airy and delicious malt flavor, mildly sweet with hints of coffee and candy. Very smooth with a great aftertaste. mrnutsnbolts (204) - anywhere usa, - DEC 9, 2005
Hand Tap @ Barclay’s. Pours a dark burgundy brown color with a small ring of head around the glass. Tastes like a hoppy, semi-sweet stout. Chocolate, coffee flavors with a hint of spiciness and punch. The hops really come out in the finish, which detracts from the overall flavor of the beer. Thick mouthfeel. Flavor improves as the beer warms. Kind of a surprise, but definately enjoyable. bb (9268) - Alamo, California, USA - DEC 13, 2005
Cask. Blackish beer with a nice beige head. Caramal malt and some roastiness in the aroma. Caramel malt, roasty, and then a nice bitter hop (pine/citrus) flavor. Nicely balanced. Easy to drink. Rich, velvety mounthfeel. HopheadHans (804) - Bay Area, California, USA - DEC 28, 2005
Tap at the Toronado. Black with a fairly small head. Now this puppy tastes intensely of malts and to a lesser extent chocolate. It is medium bodied, lighter than the color would indicate. Again, I could not make out much of an aroma except some maltiness. y0cola (361) - fremont, California, USA - JAN 1, 2006
aroma is devilish. white lacing remains on glass walls. flavor is molty, hoppy and bitter. leaves a clear well balanced bitterness on the palate.

On tap at toronado. Black with a fizzy white head. Faint roasty aroma. Burnt roasty taste with a good bitter bite. Good. tomciccateri (1034) - Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA - JAN 8, 2007
On draught at HopYard. Pours an opaque dark brown with a lasting tan head. Very rich, creamy mouthfeel and surprisingly big body. Rich malty flavor with a slight molasses character. Slightly dry finish and late hint of alcohol. Nice. kmweaver (3207) - Petaluma, California, USA - DEC 2, 2009
Draft @ Toad in the Hole. Pours a dark, cola-brown color; very light cocoa-colored head with lacing that coats the glass like paint; nice pour. Nicely dry, roasted aroma: cocoa, bitter chocolate, and heavily roasted malts; very bitter, but not necessarily from a hop note; heavily bittered roast. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: lively bitterness, minerals, roasted malts and bitter dark chocolate; tastes almost bittersweet, like it could perpetually stand to breathe a little; tight carbonation, sharp bitterness; the juicy mineral and citrus hoppiness becomes more prominent as it warms, outshining the bitter chocolate core. Lasting, bitter mineral hops, bitter chocolate; perfectly dry, as always. 944play (418) - Santa Rosa, California, USA - DEC 1, 2011
Cask at Toad in the Hole. Deep red-brown with fine taupe sparkler head. Fairly strong piney, herbaceous, resiny nose. Almost a mentho-lyptus kind of cough drop thing is happening with the flavor, where a bunch of anesthetic bittering matches up to a complementary sweetness. Fresh but brusque, unsubtle finish and biggish body. ineedbeer (2153) - Oakland, California, USA - DEC 19, 2012
On hand pump at Toronado.
Aroma is muted but contains a lot of dark roast malt, burnt dark caramel and chocolate. A touch of a phenolic note with some dark fruit esters as well. Dark fruit is plum and cherry. No alcohol or hops in aroma.
Pours a dark brown that is lighter on the edges with a short, thick, light tan head with good retention and lacing.
Flavor is light roast, some dark caramel and a touch of bitter chocolate. The flavor also has a bit of dark fruit, mostly plum and fig. Low dank, woody hop flavor with a touch of citrus. Finishes with sweet dark caramel and light roast. A touch of light alcohol and phenolic spice.
Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy as expected for something from a hand pump. Medium bodied with low carbonation. A touch of astringency in the finish. Low to medium alcohol warmth.
Overall an enjoyable beer. Nice dark malt character without being too roasty and stout-like. The astringency in the finish is a bit strong.
