Cask (handpump) at the Ministry of Ale brewpub, Burnley. A weird gaff, but I’ll save that for Places. With a name like White Sapphire, you know what the brewer is aiming for, but it doesn’t quite succeed on all levels. The colour is very pale straw, verging on the washed-out. Its dry, crisp, clean and refreshing. Its also entirely straightforward. An archetypal lager alternative beer. There’s no doubt that its proficiently made, but its not overly gutsy. There’s no rasping hoppiness or burst of juicy fruit to make an impact. Efficient is a word that springs to mind. Clinical is another. Exciting does not. Now I’m making it sound like the German football team. Whatever, I prefer my blondes rather more feisty.
