Style: Black Ale Draught ABV: 4.7% Illusion is our latest creation, which is inspired by the awesome new beer style created in the States known as Imperial Black Ale. We really admire the profile of this new style but wanted a session strength version. We brewed ours at 4.5% instead of the typical 8%+, but wanted to retain the unique flavour profile. We sourced the special malt required from Germany and the hops from America to create a beer of stunning depth and complexity. The beer is black in appearance but lacks the acrid flavours associated with all other dark beers. This is achieved through use of the special German malt. The hop aromas and flavours are very intense, which we achieve through a major dose of dry-hopping in the cask. The result is a beer that wraps all the wonderful hop profiles of a pale ale inside a silky black exterior. It is truly an Illusion that deceives your eyes and dazzles your taste buds. Due to the rare nature of these special ingredients it is a limited release beer, but we are looking at making it more regularly available if possible.

330ml can. Jet black appearance with a one-two finger tan head. Aroma: citrus hops, grapefruit, malt, pine, some roasty/coffee notes. Taste: exactly as the aroma. Really silky smooth palate, bitter finish. Fantastic beer, love the fact its session strength as well.

330 ml can bought at Great Food Hall in Pacific Place, Admiralty.

Looks: Opague blackish brown colour with a cloud of misty yeast particles; One finger head with crumpety beige foam which lasts for 3 minutes; Beautiful sticky lacing and near zero carbonation.

Aroma: Very fragrant rich dark malt, with strong grapefruits, passion fruits, floral, light honey, caramel, strong toffee, cream, chocolate, strong pine, resins, biscuits, yeast, strong lemon and strong grass.

Taste: Light sweet rich dark malt, with strong wheaty tartness, strong grapefruits, floral, caramel, strong toffee, dark chocolates, light cream, light molasses notes, strong pine, resins, dry biscuits, yeast, strong lime, strong bitter hops and sharp grass.

Body: Medium body. Creamy and oozy palate.

Mouth Feel: Undeniably rich dark maltyness in a very smooth and creamy background, despite strong presence of tart wheatyness. A web of strong tastes including grapefruits, toffee, caramel, pine, resins and chocolates linger to the tongue. Biscuity with strong lime to round. Excellent!

Hoppiness: Strong grapefruits, passion fruits, floral, strong pine, resins, strong lemon and strong grass in nose. Strong grapefruits, floral, strong pine, resins, strong lime and sharp grass in taste; Bitterness is strong for a lasting, high astringent grassy malty finish.

After Taste: Quite dry. Creamy and chocolate bitter to mouth.

Comments: Session Black IPA, how about that? This one dark maltyness and grapefruit hops are so rich in aroma that they literally fight each other to please my nose. Taste is just as strong and sparkling with distinctive chocolates, toffee and milk being matched closely with grapefruits, lime and ooze. This brewer is specialist in making bone fide session beers. In Moor we trust!

It pours black with a huge and thick beige cream. Really thick, one can eat it with a spoon (Ive tried it, no jokes). Aroma is roasted malts, floral, citrus and coffee. Smooth and medium bodied, in the palate feels lots of roasted malts, notes of coffee, some tropical fruit. Dry hoppy finish. Lovely.

Dark roast coffee, floral and pine hops, dark bread. Black, small, creamy, off-white head. Light bitter. Black filter coffee, fruity and piney hops, quite bitter finish. Decent Black IPA, well-balanced and fairly intense despite the low ABV. Can from Independent Spirit, Bath.

Can from SIPS at PP. Light black pour with foamy head. Aroma and taste are impressively big for a lighter beer. Not bad but maybe had too high expectations.
