This is one big beer. Forget the ABV, which is just a by-product of the passion. James and Josh from the Queen’s Arms, Corton Denham, and I (hence JJJ) have a shared passion for great beers and were lamenting the lack of true IPAs in the UK. So we decided to brew our own version of heaven. Double IPA was just not good enough - we needed a triple IPA. Triple the gravity, triple the colour, and more than triple the hops. With nearly 700 kg of malt and over 11.5 kg of hops this beer is big in every sense. In fact, it was so big and hoppy that it broke our pump! Deep copper in colour, over the top in aroma and flavour, but somehow still remaining (somewhat) balanced, this beer is not for the faint of heart. And if you don’t like hops, don’t even think about it. But if you do, dare we say this may be the best beer you’ll ever taste. We like it so much that upon racking we decided to make it a permanent part of the range.

660ml bottle pours a copper color with a small white head that leaves no lacing behind. Aroma is caramel and lighter fruits with some grapefruit hops. Taste is a bold grapefruit hop bitterness with some tropical fruit and caramel malty sweetness and a hint of alcohol with a grainy finish. Medium to heavy body with mild carbonation. Overall, this is like a hoppy barley wine and I really enjoyed sampling this one.

Mortlach (2335) - Rome, ITALY - APR 17, 2017
On tap @Buskers Pub (Rome). Pesca giallona, opalescente, schiuma leggera. Al naso sentori di malto, frutta gialla, mango, melone, resina. In bocca ha una base di malto importante con amaro finale deciso. Corpo pieno, carbonazione medio-leggera. Birra sui generis, una sorta di american barley wine. Molto buona!

330ml can. Pours a deep amber/copper colour with a medium off-white head with good retention and lacing. Aroma: pine, citrus fruits, grapefruit, tropical fruit, orange. Taste: lots of fruity hops, citrus, tropical, orange, grapefruit, sweet malt, caramel. Pretty bitter but pleasant, touch of alcohol but overall it’s fairly well hidden, medium bodied, fairly well balanced. A very drinkable DIPA. I’m sure this would have been one of the best beers ever when it was first brewed 9 years ago, still holds up well today.

330ML Can Not copper color but a lighter shade of orange amber. Off white head. Rocky but very good retention for the AVB. Big strips of lacing on the sides of the glass. Very muted nose. Soft pine and citrus, soft caramel backbone. Faint bubblegum lollypop nose. Taste is very candied. Candied, sweet malt, Notes of watermelon bubblegum, candied citrus. Some soft bitterness that does grow. Some resin and oil but to be the profile says Imperial pale, not IIPA. Feel says big, bold pale, more about malt than hops, that is OK. Well hidden alcohol and well balanced. solid

Canned. Big, big citrus pine nose. Pours golden. Packed full of citrus bitterness but somehow well balanced. The abv is incredibly well hidden.

Cask Half Pint at Cask Pub & Kitchen, Pimlico, London in Feb 2011 - Deep Amber in colour. Hazy. Intensely Hoppy; piney resinous hops. Very Fruity; citrus grapefruit, orange and tropical fruit. Malty; biscuity malts, caramel. Great hop/fruit/malt balance. Sweet-bitter citrus hoppy fruity and slightly dry throughout. Liked this a lot. Lovely IIPA! (2011-02-05)

On tap. Gusto amaro pieno e molto secco. Corpo pieno, trama concretamente terrosa con i luppoli quasi in masticazione. Carbonazione molto presente con sensazione di solidificazione. Finale di bocca secco e cremoso. Dopo beva alcolico e maltato cupo. Una IIPA assolutamente concreta e densa nella luppolatura, agli estremi del genere ma tuttavia alquanto godibile e non così forzata.

On tap. Colore ambrato, schiuma bianca persistente. Al naso odori floreali ed erbacei. Al gusto si sente un intensità di luppoli ben amalgamati, note di caramello, malti tostati. Retrogusto medio.

Tap at Buskers in Rome-Italy with Mortlach. Cloudy amber pour, creamy ivory foam. Nose: sweet citric, cookies, malt. Mouth is an attack of sweet/bitter notes, amber malts, alcohol is quite strong.

Can. Beer Central, Sheffield. Holy shit, I never would’ve imagined this beer was first brewed so long ago. Just shows how much Moor is such an influential, progressive brewery, who popped up on the cusp of a beer revolution in the U.K. I imagine drinking this, then, is like the first time trying Summer Lightning, or a bottle of White Shield or Orval. Super juicy. Super easy drinking. Awesome.

Pours dark orange with nice head. Aroma: herbs, nice spices, citrus and ripe oranges. Taste: nice full body, a bit biscuits, herbs and oranges. Very good. ABV well hidden
