This light flavored black lager is our version of a classic schwarzbier. This schwarzbier has moderate malt flavors that finish clean and sweet, and are balanced out nicely with just a hint of bitterness. The appearance is very dark brown, with a tan-colored head. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium to medium-high carbonation. Black Bear is truly a beer that will surprise the drinker. It is overall dark, but very pleasantly sweet with no harshness that most would expect from a dark beer. This beer is available seasonally, so try it when you can.

Tasted on tap at the St Louis Brewers Guild Halloween Fest in a commemorative stange glass. It poured an opaque dark brown colour with beige foam, lasting with lace. It started-out seeming like a true-to-style schwarzbier (German black lager) but a massive diacetyl infection ruined both the aroma and flavour. Too bad, maybe they just rushed it to the fest without proper conditioning time?

Midnight black pour. Aroma of light toffee, cola, nuts, coffee, and chocolate. None of them more than the rest. This wasnt what I expected. I was thinking a heavy brew with overpowering coffee and hops. The flavor is lighter and very balanced. Probably one of the best dark beers around. Can @ Hammerstones, ST. Louis.

Can; poured a dark brown/black color with a light brown frothy head. Aroma fairly sweet, fruity, earthy and touch of must. Flavor had less sweetness, which was good. Fairly pleasant flavor; touch of sweetness, fruit, and must, with maybe hint of roasted.

Taster on tap at the brewpub during RBSG. Clear brown color. Off-white head. Decent loose thicker lace. Medium body. Smooth, kind of soft, lighter carbonation. Lightly chewy. Toasty, light chocolate. Some earthy herbal flavors. Moderate sweet taste, pretty dry finish, light bitter. OK schwarzbier. Quickly wears on me.

Draught at the brewery.
Pours a deep brownish amber with a decent head and some lacing on the glass.

The aroma is roasty and chocolaty. Its rich, nutty, & clean.

The flavor is nicely roasty & bitter with some floral hoppiness. Rich, clean, and enjoyable.

I pretty well liked this one, sheesh!
