11/27/13. On tap at the "Downtown Market" in Asheville. $3 pints while walking around and shopping? Yes, please! Deep ruby amber brown pour with a small khaki head. Rich deep brown coloured body with a nice thin tan head and some good ruby and amber tints at the bottom. Aroma of malt, raisins, figs and a very subdued spicy scent. Medium-bodied; Very nice malt notes throughout with toffee, raisins and some brown sugar combining with the caramel and toasted malt flavours. Aftertaste shows more malt than anything else, but some nice sweetness and a very mild pepper and spice note show some complexity. Overall, a very well crafted dunkles with an emphasis on the malt of course, but enough complexity to make it seem so much more. Bottle. Pours deep brown to black with a small beige head that mostly dissipates leaving a residual that laces well. Aroma is malt, roast, cardboard. Flavor is similar, roasty, cardboardy, light sweet and just a bit bitter. Not bad, not great either. Medium body.

12oz bottle from Brewmasters in Wilson. Dark brown murky body with virtually no head (light brown). Moderate bitter taste up front with a light sweet average finish. 12 oz bottle pours brown with a off white head. Aroma of caramel malts and bread. Taste is the malts and a nice bitterness.

Pint on tap. Rich brown color, good lacing, medium head burns off to a small collar. Aroma is nuts, grains, trail mix, freshness. Warm palate, nice tapering aftertaste, bookends the beer perfectly. Another slightly roasty taste, not sour at all, which is a common mistake for a dunkel. Better than many german beers of the same style, rare achievement - not the purest traditional, but i think it may be better, actually (blasphemy!). Well the description of this beer is on target at least. The write-up claims it’s not heavy, overbearing or bitter...however...that’s kinda what one is looking for in a dark beer. Disappointing.
