A clear, crisp beer, Kölsch offers a very slight fruity flavor and aroma. It is light gold in color, with a delicate head. This light-bodied beer appeals to nearly everyone who samples it. Expect to enjoy a slight tang in the finish.

Clear clean dull yellow pour with foamy white head. Very pleasing corn and cream notes. LIghtly grassy. One of the best damn commercial examples of the style that i’ve had.

THOUGHTS: Very refreshing. A very flavorful and easy to drink beer. It would make a nice session beer. This gave me new respect for the style. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, pale yellow with a small to average, ever so slightly off-white head that mostly diminished and left good lacing. The aroma had, light bread and cracker; moderate to heavy floral hops; light to moderate yeast; and a bit of fruit. The initial flavor was lightly sweet, lightly acidic and slightly bitter; while the finish was acidic, sweet, slightly bitter and slightly sour. There was light, crackery malt, slight fruit, light bread, slight honey and floral and perfumy hops. The fairly light body was watery and then sort of dry with fizzy carbonation and a slightly metallic finish.

This seems to be a pretty well loved beer in the Charlotte area I can see why. Pours a golden color with a big white head leaving good lace. The beer is perfectly clear which is a nice look for it. The aroma is doughy with some fresh cut hay and some citrus peel along with some grassy and honey notes. The flavor is dry with a nice minerally character, the beer is pretty well hopped and has a nice herbal hoppiness. There were some mild metallic flavors but these really weren’t very distracting from all the nice things going on here.

12 ounce bottle from Bruisin’ Ales in Asheville, North Carolina. Bottled on: 08/10 Appearance: Pours a faintly hazed, golden body with a large, sudsy, near white head. Smell: Sweetish, grainy blend of pale and pils malts with notes of hillside flowers and citrusy lemons. Taste: Pale malts with some light sugary flourishes and hints of crisp grains. Soft florals tones and a taste of lemon verbena. Light bitterness, then a pop of acidity. Medium minerality throughout. Touch of honeysuckle precludes the dry, crisp, yet still smooth finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium-plus carbonation provides a modest bit of tingle on the tongue. Drinkability: A fairly likable Kölsch. Good for the dog days of Summer, but suits me just fine during a coolish mid-afternoon in Autumn. Paired well enough with a grilled shrimp po’ boy.

Serving: 12 oz. bottle from Captain Easy’s.
Aroma: The nose is pure Kolsch with a nice noble hop note and a little bit of grain background. Perhaps a bit of light citrus as well.
Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy deep yellow color with a large, rocky, white head. There is lots of action from carbonation in this one.
Taste: Definitely a bit on the bitter side with good bit of soapiness. The bitterness is a bit overwhelming making the flavor rather one dimensional.
Palate: Light in body with an abundance of soft carbonation leading to a lengthy and dry bitter finish.
Overall: The nose leads you to believe one thing but the flavor comes across as rather singular and doesn’t quite deliver. It’s an admirable attempt but there are better examples of the style out there.

Pours a crystal golden color that is quite similar to a glass of apple juice with a substantial, cream-colored head that leaves a sticky trail along the wall of the glass long after it has evaporated. The aroma is crisp and inviting, with a hint of hops that is earthy (and approaching musty) and a sweetness that I would again compare to apple juice or maybe a semi-sweet white wine. The flavor has more of a soft, earthy hop character and a bit of biscuit from the malt and yeast. The texture is quite smooth, but at the same time pleasantly tingly with its soft carbonation.
