Not quite English. Not quite American. Foggy Notion is a big ole, 100% Ozarks-born barleywine ale. Boatloads of malt give this full-bodied beauty a deep-copper color and light brown sugar flavor. Six months of aging nurtures hints of oak & stone fruit, making Foggy Notion perfect for sharing or sipping alone.

Pours dark, murky ruby with small, khaki topper. Heavy sweet malt aroma with hints of bread and alcohol. Notes of caramel and stone fruit atop a thick malt backbone. Well masked alcohol, yet warm. Rich and slick, soft carbonation. Lovely Mother’s offering.

Tasted at a bottle share in a hotel room after the last Jackie-O’s bottle release. Mostly hazy darker amber orange color. Little off-white head. Bits of lace. Lots of caramel, dark fruit. Big sweetness in the nose. Bigger body. Some vanilla in the flavor. Smooth, lighter carbonation. Lightly slick. Tropical fruity hoppy aroma. OK tropical fruity sweet barleywine. Tastes like a lot I’ve had before.

12 oz bottle purchased at Berbiglia Midtown in Kansas City, Missouri. The pour is a hazed orange brown copper with a smaller tan head. The aroma is sweet caramel malt, some nut and a warming alcohol presence. The taste is sticky brown sugar caramel malt, turns a bit metallic, some apple fruit, then the alcohol heat shows in the finish. The alcohol was better integrated in the nose, a bit sharp in the taste. The palate is medium bodied, mouth coating texture, ultimately on the dried side with the alcohol. Decent, I’ll try this again with a few months on it.

Pours a dark brown with a thin ivory head. Smells like candied fruit, oak, vanilla, and bread. As it warms dark and dried fruit flavors emerge, full bodied and sweet, nice barleywine.

topherh (1929) - Kearney, Missouri, USA - DEC 3, 2013
Pours murky orange amber with a thin white head. Aroma is sweet and malty, brown sugar, vanilla, and booze. Flavor is much of the same with some woody notes and a bit of a bitter finish.

A sweet, solid barleywine. Reddish brown, thickish head, with an alcoholic punch. Toffee, brown sugar, and caramel.

That1Guy (2240) - Colorado, USA - OCT 17, 2013
Shorty 12 oz bottle pours hazy brown-red. Quite the sweet barley wine. Aroma throws some nail polish, red apple, and green apple. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say this was a dubbel.

Sample @ GABF 13. Pours a clear amber beer with a small off white head on top. Aroma is boozy, woody, caramel, some vanilla. Flavour is very complex, woody, vanilla, bourbon, booze, oak. Lots of things going on here. Medium long, sweet finish. Sticky mouthfeel. Very nice.
