A collaboration between Mountain Goat Brewery and the Brooklyn brewery.
The resulting beer is now out and is a Hopfweizenbock, AKA a hoppy, strong wheat beer. Its a beer style brewed by Brooklyn in the States and this version uses the exact same yeast (from the worlds oldest existing brewery, Weihenstephan) and exact same grain bill as the US beer. Where it differs is in the use of Melbourne water and, more importantly, Aussie hops. A tonne (not literally) of Tassie Galaxy hops were added to the conditioning tanks two grams per litre, according to Goat, to give the beer a distinctive Aussie twist. That said, the tropical fruit aromas from the Galaxy dont have it all their own way, with the Weihenstephan yeast throwing up plenty of banana and bubblegum esters too. In fact, the hops come to the fore as much in the mouth, adding a slightly resiny, fruity kick to the full-bodied, malty, slightly spicy beer.

Bottle from Plonk (October 2013). Hazy dark orange/amber, frothy/soapy off-white head, wheat malt, lemon peel, grassy/grapefruit hops, mild banana, doughy yeast. Different!

Once again the point of difference is the problem - leave the galaxy hops out (the mountain goat "creative" bit) and this is a really lovely malty and creamy dunklerweissbock (the brooklyn bit). Add the galaxy in and its a dunklerweissbock drenched in orange juice and passionfruit. how is that creative? why?

BB 29/04/14. Poured a cloudy amber colour with a big (3+ finger) light tan foamy head that diminished quickly to a collar of bubbles. Laced as spots at best. Faint aroma of hops and not much else. Taste of earthy hops that leaves a rough bitterness in the mouth. Light body. Rough bitter finish. A mix of different styles that failed.

Pours a cloudy orange colour with a frothy white head. Aroma is malt, wheat, citrus, yeast and cloves. Taste is light sweet with a puckery bitterness leading to a wheaty and yeasty finish. Nice.

Bottle. Pours deep cloudy orange with big big off white head. Aromas of wheat, grain, lemon, lightly toasted malts. Medium body, big hoppy passionfruit, citrus, floral hop character over a light caramel toffee body. Finishes lightly sour, generous bitterness, smooth creamy chewy finish

A confusing medley of looks, aroma and taste this one turned out to be. Produces up a muddy and opaque pale brown with a very messy drab of wash atop. Fresh, bright hop nose off-set by a touch of lactic acid and sour cream - rather subtle and simple but not at all alluring. Sour and lactic on the palate with a harsh, weedy bitterness that is lasting. Very light bodied and effervescent. Tart, acidic malt with a grape-skin astringency that gets the tongue to twist. A touch of tooth-pick, a touch of lemon peel and band-aid phenols. In no way a wheat Bock at least. Not good at all. To be fair Ill need another bottle! (64cL, BB 29/04/14, Dan Murphys Currambine)
