On tap at Vine Street. Pour is pitch black with a big brown head and sticky lacing. Roasty, cocoa nibs, some coffee, a touch earthy, and bready aroma. Taste is big roast, light grapefruit hops, some oranges, espresso, a touch of vanilla, and rye bread with a medium bitter finish. No signs of alcohol. Medium body with medium carbonation. Tap. Pours deep, dark brown with thin, creamy tan head; short retention and spare lacing. Aroma is roasted and chocolate malts, plums, raisins, black cherries, light spicy hops, and light woody notes. Flavor is roast malts forward with good.supporting earthy hops and dark chocolate with light coffee and dark fruit esters; dry, ashy finish. Medium body and low carbonation. On tap at Mtn Sun. Pours a very dark brown with a half finger of coarse brown head. Settles in minutes with moderate amounts of lacing. Aroma is roasted, dark malt, chocolate malt, roasted oats, slight coffee. Flavor is hoppy and sweet up front with fruity tones fading into roasted malt, dark malt, nutty, cocoa, roasted oatmeal, slight vanilla and fruity tones. Mild alcohol in the finish but overall is well masked considering the ABV. Soft carbonation, medium to full body, and smooth texture. Strongly sweet roast aroma with alcohol tones. Pitch black in color with tan head. Very sweet and intense stout with a great warming alcohol finish.

On tap at Avery Strong Ale Fest poured a clear dark reddish brown with a lasting brown head. Aromas of coffee, bitter chocolate, roastiness and light earthiness. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of roastiness, bitter chocolate, earthiness and light coffee with a smooth dry lingering roasty finish. Draught at several locations over the years: Penetrable ebony. Broken khaki head. Roast-heavy nose features complex but straightforward notes of chocolate mousse, rich java, burnt toffee and brown sugar. Some fruity plum esters along with a peachy hop scent. Creamy and pillowy carbonation. Full-bodied. Quite dense and weighty on the palate, with an aggressive chocolate-covered espresso bean and vodka-soaked fudge cake union. Thickset, well-textured malt is enlivened by an edgy zing of burnt-cookie char that lurks in the depths and provides lovely support. Smoky dab of espresso breaks the roasty monotony with a significantly clean vibrancy. Some clingy notes of taffylike yeast combine with black licorice, cassis and plum, though the potent roast, perhaps to levels of excess, forcefully persists and counterbalances the tackiness. No apparent chalkiness, however. Well-buried earthy hop bitterness deposits some citrus rind, though it dovetails nicely with the explosive roastiness. Closes substantially dry with intense char alongside softer nuances of taffy and fudge cake capped with a black-licorice tingle. While this IS complex (not a difficult feat in this particular style), it would perhaps benefit from a dialed-down sweetness and a more-finessed maltiness. Pour on tap at the brewery (Vine St) is thick black with tan head, aroma brings notes of anise, big, big anise with hints of roast, chocolate and coffee, nice dark fruit and earth notes come through as well. Taste is anise and dark figs, raisins and plums, touch of caramel and coffee, finishes fairly bitter with a great mouthfeel. This tastes like Abyss would if it wasn’t BA. Nicely done, though not quite my style of IS.
