Numerous snifters over the past few weeks @ Southern Sun and Vine Street Pub: Golden orange. Sustained collar of foam surrounds a fragmented center. Clingy lacework. Alluring nose of pecan skin, turkish apricot, sassafras, Russian sage, lilac, black tea, puttylike yeast, dry cookie malt, citrus marmalade, grapefruit zest, gum and a smidgeon of licorice-tinged hops. Soft prickles of lush carbonation. Initially very clean with gently sweet cookie notions trailing a gorgeously polished and understated pecanlike and earthy malt anchor. Grain develops more bounciness which augments the center with ample fullness despite the impeccable attenuation. Mild tang of elegantly subdued hops provides a twinge of grapefruit zest sharpness as a bright and succulent splash of peachlike esters and lavender jam emerges. Abundance of interesting characters mimicking woody sassafras and licorice root harmonize with black tea and fruity esters. As things tread towards excess sugar, the dry malt gracefully comes through to counterbalance with a pumpernickel breadcrust bitterness. Closes with a stiff yet composed clench of brisk phenols adorned with a robust earthy hop sparkle along with a chewy and multilayered yet deeply clean nutty malt kiss. Wonderful stuff. Very biere de garde-like, and a spot-on one at that. It’s remarkably juicy yet perfectly dry, rustic, and endlessly quaffable, and dizzyingly complex yet unpretentious and approachable. These guys are really hitting their strides with the dry and balanced Belgians!

Having this one side by side with the Ciel was quite the experience - while the Ciel had a lot going on with peppery and funky phenols, this beer was much cleaner and brighter - dry as all get out, with crisp, crackery maltiness - there are some phenols present, but there are subtle, adding some flinty/earthy/dusty notes and a hint of pepper - very mild estery character in the finish - so crisp - so dry - so delicious - this brewer keeps improving on Belgian styles - love this! 3fourths (9347) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 8, 2012

Clear gold in color with a nice persistant white head. Leafy hoppy aroma with a little bit of resin, with a backbone of some pale malt with a bit of toffee. Nice flavor of the same; leafy hops, a touch of resin, some pale malt sweetness and a subtle toffee finish, with smooth bitterness throughout.
