Draft. Unfiltered brown body with a short tan colored head. Herbal / tea-like brown malt aroma with more of a mint character than anything like basil (or maybe that’s what black basil is like, I’m not sure). Malt is cookie-ish and basic, there’s little to no life with the yeast, no phenols, minimal dark fruit esters (or maybe special b?). Medium+ body, medium sweetness, low bitterness, medium acid. Soft and creamy at least, but flavors aren’t in line with my preferences for saison and the herb treatment seems uneccessary (I say that almost without exception though). jlulensk (40) - san jose, California, USA - NOV 14, 2013

Pours a dark amber with a finger of tan head. Sweet basil aroma with hints of malt, floral with hints of fruit. Flavor is sweet and strong basil up front, then nutty and mildly malty. Basil flavor lingers. Soft carbonation and medium body. Mild and smooth mouthfeel with a relatively clean finish. The basil is somewhat cleansing. Draught snifter at Vine Street Pub, Denver: Black with a chestnut glow. Fragmented grayish foam maintains a creamy collar. Zesty, grassy basil aromas are accompanied by cedar, licorice, plum, white pepper, sharp but subtle roast, and browned biscuit. Softly floral, as well. Subtle note of burnt popcorn. Soft bubbly pinpricks. Lusciously plummy and candyish, initially, with pronounced Special B-like notions swirled with grass and licorice from the basil. Surprisingly harmonious basil-and-zippily-phenolic interplay. Wonderful malty fullness is aided by a clean bubblegum-laced cushion. Vague metallic zing from the char. Fruity roundness adequately tempers the malt which significantly bolsters drinkability. Potent peppery warmth from both the adjuncts and alcohol, with loads of white pepper zip. Closes with beefy, candyish Crystalesque malt girth with waxy prune and sweet blackcurrant echoes. I applaud the effort here, but ultimately it’s a tad sweet and things don’t quite coalesce. Toning down the basil and residual sweetness would definitely help. Not bad.

Tap in Denver. Dark brown pour, small head. Apparent basil, peanut butter, charcoal. Slightly sweet. Very high carbonation, more peanut flavor. Basil is there but doesn’t compliment the malt profile at all. A failed but interesting experiment IMO
