Numerous glasses at Vine Street Pub during the summer of 2012: Hazy blonde. White foam diminishes into a sustained collar. Pleasant nose of lychee, white peach, kumquat, gooseberry, shaved coconut, melon rind, lime sorbet/key lime pie. Mild note of sulfury phenols and gum. Opens with a lactic twang which gently buckles the cheeks, as a lychee and kumquat tandem lends a light succulence. Lustrous chardonnay flavors yield all sorts of vibrant juiciness. Pervasive tartness is dialed-in quite nicely and exudes with grace, allowing the ripe fruit characters to thrive. Vanillin-like oakiness exhibits an oak-chip effect, akin to toasted coconut. Herbal hops are adorned with plentiful notes of lavender and white pepper which beautifully contrast with the white peach and white grapefruit peel. Closes amply tart with a sour-mash character, and nicely sharp with a bite of lime zest combining with kumquat and lychee. Malt-derived vanilla wafer cookie fuses with toasty vanillin oak and luscious chardonnay in the prolonged aftertaste. Pretty well-executed, although with less sweetness and less-weighty malt (a tad overly starchy and poundcakey, which overshadows some of the brighter nuances and hampers drinkability), this would be markedly improved. Pours a hazy orange straw with half a finger of diminishing white head, minimal lacing. Aroma is nice belgian yeast, fruity and floral, with citrus tones. Flavor is tart fruity, bread/dough up front, apple, pear. Fades into sweet wheat. Soft carbonation and medium body, with a clean finish. Light, tasty, refreshing. Draft at Vine Street with Andrew and Moreau. Pour a bright, golden body with thin white lacing. Aroma is light spice, flowers and yeast. Mouthfeel is thin and watery with floral flavors and notes of spice, pepper, light fruit and watery fruit juice. This was collectively one of our least favorites. More IPAs please. Clear pale straw yellow color, white head. Sweet, spicy, Belgian scent. Phenolic, fresh, some acidic taste. Spritzy mouthfeel, low bitterness.
Tap at Vine Street - an interesting brew here - not entirely saison-like, but good - quite dry and lightly dusty in the nose, with light notes of apple and pear, but otherwise moderately spicy and lightly phenolic - the sour mash adds an interesting dimension to the brew - it is quite dry, with moderate spicy/peppery notes - there is a light fruity character that the sour mash accentuates quite well, creating a strong white wine character throughout - finish is moderately bitter, a little flinty, very dry - the only flaw is that the rice creates a light starchiness in the aroma and flavor that the beer could really do without - refreshing and interesting. arminjewell (9676) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - JUL 10, 2012
Pour on tap at Avery Sourfest 2012, slightly hazy orange pour with white head, aroma brought notes of biscuit, spice with some hint of lavender, touch of herbal, grass, some nice peach and pear, some spicy notes come through again, pretty nice. @ Avery Sourfest 2012. Hazy dark gold, with a thin white head. Delightful saison aroma of straw, dry peach, barn funk, and belgo pale malts. Taste was the same, funky and earthy but pale and delectable, with flavor notes of fruitiness and hay and Belgian barn esters. The way a saison needs to taste.
