On tap at Vine St. Very dark with almost no head. Awkward aroma of chocolate malts and oats, with a funky Belgian yeast tone that reminded me of sweat, but it’s saved by some coffee tone. Curious and everywhere at once. Nice tart flavor of smooth wine dryness and chocolate malt, with a refreshing quality, strange for it’s ABV. Just too sharp and crisp and slightly acidic for me. Draft in early 2010: Penetrable black. Grayish big-bubbled foam. Prominent Belgian yeast taints the muted nose along with notes of banana bread, metallic malt, cola, bubblegum, clove, and rum. Dab of fusel alcohol exudes beneath. Seltzery carbonation crumbles on the palate. Opens with a forceful combo of bubblegum and plasticlike phenolics along with a disagreeable unripe bananalike twang which drastically lessens the looming malt richness. Fusel and underattenuated with a pervasive medicinal sweetness akin to overripe plums. What minute malt definition is detectable is obscured by the assertive banana-tinged yeastiness and a clingy smoky molasses characteristic. Quite limp, throughout. Finishes limp, dull and resoundingly colalike with dabs of clove, pepepry alcohol, and alcohol detracting from the distant malt. Rather sloppy (very sugary, vague malt definition, poorly structured), unclean (fusels, overt yeast presence), and fizzy on the tongue. Black with lighter tan head. Aroma is forward with coffee and chocolate. Flavor also assertive with chocolates, toast, molasses, light licorice, and odd fruit (date maybe). Beer ends boozy with some caramel. 3fourths (9347) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - FEB 27, 2010
black. nose is mostly creamy/lactic yeast along with inky fig, date and plum. chewy mild dark stone fruits and sweetened chocolate up front. moderately smooth texture, nothing exciting or really groundbreaking going on, and it has a flavor that’s something close to tire rubber. decent but not exemplary.
