Pours a clear Auburn with a small white head. Aroma of cinnamon, anise, caramel and cardamom. Taste is cinnamon, anise, mace, caramel and a light bitterness in the finish. Pours a copper-ruby into the glass with an eggshell cap head that leaves suds lacing. The nose is malty, spiced and somewhat vegetal/herbal. Flavors are of dry pie spices, malt, herbs and finishing with some grainy notes. The mouthfeel is active with carbonation. A medium-light body ensues, with the heavy spices and herbal notes leaving a semi-dry palate. Not bad, but it tries almost too hard to achieve the "winter" essence, seeming a bit over-spiced. The spices overbalance toward grains and herbs, missing out on some comforting sweetness that is normally found in a winter seasonal. It’s a perfectly "ok" brew, but not quite the complex, substantial offering one would expect to find for comfort during cold winter nights.

Draft at Sprenger’s. Reasonably bright amber with medium off-white foam. Puzzling aroma of pine sap and Szechuan peppercorn melts into kooky ginger and cinnamon. Cinnamon Toast Crunch meets Läkerol clumsily in the flavor. Clean ferment, but the finish is wanting for a bit more bitterment.. or something. Aroma is rich malts, cinnamon, fig, spice and molasses. Taste is sweet and almost chewy mouthfeel. Pretty rich flavors similar to aroma. The spiciness and cinnamon in particular come through. Light caramel and fig. Appearance is an orange /amber with a thin pearl creamy head that retains fairly poorly.
