Write up made it sound fantastic...taste, unfortunately, didn’t measure up. Quite weak for a stout. Not much there.
It is dark brown in color with a brown head. The head retention is low. It has a malty sweet aroma with a hints of herbal hops. There is a good background note of smoked that creates added complexity. There is very low fruit as well. The sweet malt and smoke mixed together quite well and are in balance. There are also spicy and herbal notes with some moderate bitterness. It has a moderate body with low carbonation and some alcohol warmth. Bottle shared at the 8th Richmond Industry Gathering, 12/1/13. Pours a clear copper color with a large foamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of rye, smoke, mild earth and toast. On draught at Barley's Taproom in Asheville, this pours the deepest mahogany, almost opaque black into the glass, with a nice tan head that leaves soapy lacing. A sweetly smoked, roasted, almost herbal nose ensues. Flavors are of roasted coffee, smoked grains, herbs, faint legumes and burnt caramel, finishing with a smoked sweet grain. The mouthfeel is silky with a medium-full body and semi-active palate. A nice winter warmer, this sweet smoked stout goes down well in cold evenings.

Cask at the Black Friday Cask Festival, Triangle Brewing, Durham. Another solid offering from Mystery, who seem to be finding their way more consistently of late. Nice pour, slightly oily mouthfeel. The basic flavors are very well realized, and the smokey choc did go down nicely on a brisk afternoon. Interestingly enough, though, I got the distinct impression of some dark cherry and vanilla in there as well, nicely complementing the whole. At Tylers Apex. Good aroma, sweet, smoke. Chocolate, moderate smoke, dark blackish brown color, ok head, little to no lace. Sweet flavor. Heavier body, oily viscous mouthfeel, sweet finish . Good, probably best I’ve had from Mystery as I think about it. Nice mix in aroma of sweet and smoke. Flavor more sweet.than smoke, nice chocolate.
