In the past, a common method in making beer was to dry malted grains over an open fire. This gave a smoked flavor to the beer. That tradition continues to this day in the rauchbiers of Germany. Just across the harbor from Mystic Brewery sits Boston, with its own tradition in the form of smoke. When it rose from the bench of the home team there you could rest assured; victory was at hand. Celebrate with Auerbach’s and good smoked meats, sausages and/or sharp New England cheddar.

Bottle. Pours a clear dark amber body with a small wispy beige head. The nose is intensely smoky and slightly sweet with a heavy clean caramel maltiness. Plenty smoky on the flavor, very clean and well lagered, finishes with some meaty campfire smokiness and a lingering caramel sweetness. Medium bodied, soft fizzy carbonation, zero clinginess. Very nice beer.

Bottle shared with my dad at the lake house. Pours a clear brown with a thin to medium sized white head. Soft smoke on the nose, a rich malt note. Medium bodied, loads of smoke, and a bit of toasty malt. Smoke lingers on the finish. Very nice stuff.

Bottle. Pours an amber brown with a tan head. Smells of smoked meats, malt and some spice. Flavor is sweet malt and some smoke. Light bodied.

500ml bottle. Pours a dark burgundy with very little head. Smoky aroma. Sweet caramel flavors up front followed by smoke for an overall taste resembling a flat root beer. It’s OK for a smoked beer I guess but not really that into it.

50cl bottle. Large beige head atop crystal clear copper body. Aroma is moderately sweet, caramel, light smoke cheese, flower. Taste is moderately sweet, caramel, some smoked meat. Medium body, some stickiness, low carbonation.

Bottle from Downtown Wine and Spirits. Pours a fairly clear dark brown with ruby highlights and a smallish off white head that dissipates rather quickly. Smells of charred wood and smoked ham mostly with hints of sweet caramel malts deep underneath. The flavor starts off sweet with hints of caramel and brown sugar and bits of burnt wood. The palette quickly dries out and leaves a smokey almost fruity taste coating the inside of my mouth. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet phenolic mouthfeel. Pretty good rauchbier that’s not too over the top meaty at the campfire.

Amazing smoky aroma and a lovely dark brown pour from the bottle into a tulip glass. The taste is smoky (obviously, but satisfyingly so) but a little watery, and the mouthfeel is very thin.

500mL Bottle. Roasty, charred wood and oven roasted sugar aroma. On the lighter, burning leaf side of smoke, as opposed to the strong bacon and pig fat smoke edge that a lot of smoked beers have. The palate is delicate and light. Smoke quickly gives way to nicely caramelized brown sugar malts, a dry woody sensation, and a very long lingering finish that focuses on a green juicy hop character. This is extremely well brewed beer, that has finesse and great balance, but the smoke is much too tame for something called a Rauchbier.

500 ml bottle purchased from Kappy's in Peabody. Batch 001 pours a hazy deep copper with some sediment. Nose of smoke in the foreground, but the sweet malt foundation is very present. Medium to weak on the palate, but subtle smoke flavor make up for the mouthfeel. Really tasty, hardy any in your face smoke, at all.
