Draft at NCBC. This is my 1,000th rate of a Washington beer. This is one milestone I will admit is satisfying to hit, especially since it hadn’t been done before. I am stoked that it’s one of Don’s beers--I didn’t plan where this milestone would land, but I’ve long suspected it would work out this way. He’s created a great place to come try Washington beers, and for people to learn about about well-made beer. He’s also making a ton of good beers himself. And I am stoked that it’s a saison. It’s a great style that you didn’t see made locally much, even five years ago. Seems like Washington beer is here to stay. This one pours a clear bright gold with a loose white head. There are grass, hay, and floral notes on the nose. There’s a lively medium body, showing crackers, faint white pepper, hay, wet grass, and floral notes on the mid-palate. Mild finish. One of the great things about drinking this beer was sitting next to someone who wanted to know what saison was, and her husband interrupted to hoot about how good his first sour beer--ever--was (NCBC Dark Passage, just for the record). Beer’s not just an underground sensation anymore. And thank god for that.
