Black, sasparilla body with light, off-white creamy head. Feint hop nose that is not able to separte from the roasty character. While the flavor is more hoppy than the aroma, the roasty character again dominates. Floral leafyness and charcoal swirl. More akin to a hoppy porter than a CDA--perhaps from the use of black patent, etc., rather than an emphasis on de-bittered black malts (Carafa). Nose is roasty, nutty, with some floral, earthy, and light citrus notes as well. Pours dark brown, thin head, light lace. The flavor is somewhat mild with a balanced mixture of roasted and toasted malts, light sweetness in the mid palate and medium hop flavor/bitterness in the form of floral and citrus notes. Nice and drinkable, well balance, but possibly lacking assertiveness.
