Draft at the brewpub in Seattle.
Pours a cloudy, dark golden straw color with a 1.5 finger white head that quickly settles into a lasting ring. Sporadic spots of lace left behind.
Very odd aroma with faintly smoked malts countered by a subtle hop presence. The smoke takes away from the hop profile but it’s still there lingering in the background. Hints of smoke, charcoal and barbecued meat with faint hints of citrus fruit popping up in background. If this wasn’t an ipa it would score higher in aroma.
On the fuller end of medium bodied with a really odd yet nice balance of smoke and bitter earthy hops. Combination of smoked malt and dry, resinous hops make it very bitter and bone dry but it’s a nice combo of flavors. Hints of smoked malts and bitterness complimenting and bouncing off of one another. There’s also a grassy, earthy pine flavor that’s very dry and would be incredibly bitter but surprisingly the smoke and malt notes balance things out. Subtle citrus notes but then the charcoal, grilled meat and ash notes overpower in the finish which is very, very dry. Not the best tasting beer but a crazy experiment that worked for me. riversideAK (6261) - Shoreline, Washington, USA - MAY 28, 2012
Nose of solid smoke light grain and some sorachi lemon grass hop notes. I liked the mix of hops and smoke in the nose. Pours pale golden yelloe thin head and light lace. Flavors of crackery malts light grain smoked wood a little lemon grassy fruity bitterness. Solid bitterness nice hop presence. Smoke and hops work together. Good bright but smokey finish. Bronze with a mostly dissipated head. Understated aroma. Not much hops nor smoke detectable. What smoke gently creeps into the olfactory chambers is unsalted, and unassuming. Body is of a light smoked graininess. Again, nothing would really indicate this one has IPA roots. Modestly bitter and cigarette smoke finish.
