Spéciale Belge is Brasserie Dupont’s first collaboration in its 166 year history.  Spéciale Belge is the featured beer of Philly Beer Week, and will debut during the Opening Ceremonies at Independence Hall on June 1, 2012 in the presence of Mayor Nutter.  Doing the honors of tapping will be Iron Hill Brewer Chris LaPierre – fitting since they are the collaborators on this beer.  All Iron Hill locations (Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania) will be pouring Spéciale Belge throughout June.

750ml bottle. hazed orange-amber body with a tall-building off-white head. vivid esters all over the nose, it’s fun to smell this one after seeing it in such poor shape on tap last month. the clean foam dish soap esters have a soft and rustic nature, and combined with the brown malt and vibrant hop aromatics, it’s quite the appetizing smell. the approach is high effervescence and semi-sweet toasted grains, turning more dry and bitter, and more layered, as it crawls back. washing acid and prickly white pepper phenols do a marvelous job scraping the tongue, while musty pollen-like hops prick the tongue. toasty grains, dried leaves, a bit of bark, etc.; wonderful malt throughout. quite good overall, and in fantastic shape; I’m happy to have tried it again. probably one of the biggest score differences I’ve experienced between draft (3.0) and bottle (4.0).

previous rating: draft at Hopleaf, Chicago. murky dull brown. heavy caramel and toffee malt presence gives it an unexpectedly strong malt extract syrup and nut flavor with any Belgian yeast character (light mushroom, dough and spice) taking a back seat. low bitterness, medium sweetness, low acid.. flabby and lifeless body, I’m sad to say. a touch of browned banana and overripe peach show up to play but it’s almost all semi-dark / amber malt syrup. (3.0)

Aroma is grapes, Belgian yeast, funk and mild sweetness. The flavor is grapes, malts, slight funk, Belgian yeast/spices and a mix of tart and sweet in the finish.

Always charming to see Dupmont trying to take on other Belgian beer styles while all they can do, is brewing fantastic saisons. Even this cooperation with Iron Hill resulted in a hybrid between a saison and a spéciale belge. Stable, yellowish white head, colour darkish blonde, tending towards amber; toasty aroma carrying grass, peanuts, bread, caramel, yeast, chicken broth, faintly sweetish grains. Grainy taste, nutty, dried fruits, bit saison-like yeastiness but not overtly so, caramel malts, soft, bit of nuttiness in the finish, even a bit woody, ending in grassy hops. The quietly disappearing style of Belgian amber can only benefit from initiatives like this, although it cannot hide its saison pedigree.

[email protected] 2013. Always a joy to see the underestimated spéciale belge category revived, even if only as intermediary offerings, after Palm and De Conick’s macro perversions of it. This one truly lives up to its full malty character and adds the Dupont pedigree: chalky yeast, full aromatic caramel-honey amber malts, fragrant herbal hops sit atop a gorgeous creamy palate. Pity this is retired and not bottled in 75cl or even 1L, - it would have been a worthy malty Belgian counterpart to the still-brewed Schumacher 1838’s cross-tradition Alt.

Dirty orange color with two finger head. On the nose you get burnt lemons and malt wheat, a little booze. Taste is weird, wheat, sweet, sour, acid, guess it has to be drank fresh, been sitting at my local bottle shop for a year. Or maybe it’s just a bad bottle.

Pour is a hazy orange with a large white head and lots of huge carbonation bubbles. Aroma is a nice fruity spice with some yeastiness and some honey. Flavor is more of a caramel malt with some earth and black herbal tea. Finish is almost salty with some meatiness. This was decent but also strange. It had the aroma of a saison with the flavor of a biere de garde.

On tap @ City Beer. Hazed golden pour with a white head. Nose is funky and smokey. Sweet bread, subtle yeastiness, and some pepper. Grape and floral hops. A hint of fruit, as well. Flavor is sweet bread, apple, and pear. Some pepper, light smoke, and a light funkiness. Lots of yeast, floral hops, and grape.

Aroma fresh, gentle frontal hop accents, refreshing nice approach. Slight musk with caramel sugars. Ending with white grape like nose.
Appearance : 4-
Top: large creamy, fine cap.
Base: hazed cloudy amber.
Palate : soft, refined feel, soft carbonation.
Taste: Up front tart, bit leafy, hinted with grapefruit , grape-skin. Mid sweeter with caramel sugars.
Other notes neat brew.

750, capped. Pours a cloudy dark mahogany with a loose swirly white head. Big funky ass nose. Creamy medium body with prickly carb. Toasty caramel, wet grass, hay, and a funky barnyard note. Long tangy finish.

Underated Belgian ale, from Iron Hill. Wafting aroma. Hops, fruit flavour from the yeast.Peacy colour, very lacy. Smooth.
