COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Crush Beer is our autumn offering developed in tribute to the grape harvest here in Napa Valley. In keeping with the Bavarian tradition of Oktoberfest, this beer is an Amber Lager made with traditional malts. Since we are in the wine country, we also add a small amount of grapes to each batch. They say "It takes a lot of great beer at harvest time to make great wine." It’s appropriate for Napa Smith to use grapes in one of their beers, since they also run a winery.

Overly sweet malt-bomb, indulging in all the dark caramel sugariness of an indulgent Oktoberfestbier but adding even more sweetness by tossing in grapes. Skews towards grape juice rather than wine, leaving the beer cloy and heavy as it warms. Nose reminds me of a Werther’s, as does the color, but the texture’s undercarbonated, adding to the sugary clinginess of the brew. Getting pretty hard to finish this pint.

Bottle. Gold with a slight purple tint. Aroma and taste was grape cool aid and malt liquor. Not very good.

12oz bottle - A really interesting twist on a "fest" beer. Definitely grapey/malt sweetness in the aroma. Mouthfeel is slightly more sticky than a standard beer, due probably to the grapes used. Subtle grape flavors but definitely there, light toasted notes, and maybe some apple juice. Definitely fruity and again, an interesting spin on an Oktoberfest beer. Great buy for $5.99 a sixer.

12 oz bottle. Hazy, dark golden, with a tight off white head, and decent lacing.
Malty aromas, bready, grainy. Left to warm, then agitated, the grape aroma comes out. It’s hiding in there, maybe a sauv blanc. Flavor has some malty sweetness, with a grassy hop back, and some grapefruit, presumably from the grapes.
Definitely needs to be poured and left to warm for a few minutes to get the full flavor and aroma.

At Thursday’s Total Wine Autumn beer tasting class. Grapes add complexity to a standard amber lager. Some grapes on the nose. I’d try this again.

Fatehunter (2605) - Corbett, Oregon, USA - OCT 22, 2013
Poured one finger of head on a orange/medium straw colored body. The aroma is caramel, ripe grapes and orange. It’s all fairly faint though. The taste is watery, grape and woody sweetness and mild pine bitterness. The texture is crisp with moderate carbonation. It’s a weak ale overall with a mildly interesting grape flavor.

suprchunk (2994) - Crestview, Florida, USA - SEP 26, 2013
Hazy amber colored pour. Small off-white head. No lacing. A grainy, malty aroma. Slightly fruity, but more grainy than anything. Taste is malty and grainy. Almost like grapenuts. Very good. Sweet and malty in the finish.

Bottle from World Market. Hazy golden in color with lots of sediment. Sweet nose. Almost a light vinegar aroma. Sweet malty up front with a grape juice flavor. Decent for the style.

Draught @ Napa Smith Brewpub, Napa, CA
Pours clear deep golden with a white head. Aroma has notes of mat, caramel and floral. Taste is light sweet and light bitter. Body is light to medium, texture is thin to oily, carbonation is soft.

On tap at the brewpub. It pours a clear dark golden body and a dense finger this off-white head. Sweeties malty aroma with some grassy, fruity hops. Sweet flavor too, some hop flavors but not much. Decent bitterness though. Medium body, soft carbonation. Sweet in the finish as well. A rather uninteresting one. 130807
