COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Fathead started out as a Strong Scotch Ale but has morphed over time into Barleywine territory. This beer features an addition of dark brown sugar to boost the alcohol and contribute a unique caramel/molasses character. Hopped with just enough Centennial and Cascade to offset the slight sweetness of this big, warming beer.

On draught. Pours jet black with a minimal khaki head. Nose is coffee and bourbon. Taste is moderate bourbon up front with the dark roast malt backbone coming through after. Creamy mouth feel but not cloying. Medium length finish. Very well made and not a typical barley wine. Very nice.

A better than average barleywine and decent offering from a solid brewery. Lots of caramel, honey, with a brandy finish. Tried at the Omaha Extreme Beerfest in 2016 with Jess and the parents.

While Nebraska Brewing has proven itself to be versatile across the styles, its the rich, boozy, and malty styles that they consistently deliver on. Fathead fits perfectly in that area. The barrel aging adds some woodsy oak character without putting too much whiskey char on the body. Theres alcohol warmth and this is definitely a full-bodied brew, but its far from being crushingly heavy. Flavor has butterscotch, caramel, brown sugar, and hints of vanilla. Barleywines arent generally known for their subtlety. Fathead makes 12.1% smooth.

Draft/Fest. A- Oak, butterscotch. A- Amber color, cloudy liquid, off white head. T- Butterscotch, complex. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, complex finish. O- Really tasty. The butterscotch and a bit of oak are about all that really stand out, but its easy to drink and nicely balanced.
