COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
First brewed in Tacuba, Mexico in 1925, Modelo Negra, formerly Negra Modelo, is a medium-bodied lager with slow-roasted caramel malts brewed for a rich, smooth taste. Brewed longer to enhance its flavors, Modelo Negra redefines "Dark Beer" because it is exceptionally drinkable and remarkably smooth. This Munich Dunkel-style Lager is brewed with galena and super galena hops as well as caramel malt, black malt and two and six row malt barley. These ingredients are meticulously brewed together to give Modelo Negra that bright, rich, amber hue and that iconic, medium-bodied flavor.

UPDATED: APR 8, 2018 For a Modelo, not bad at all! Especially on a darker german-style beer. Aromas typical of a lager---grainy and grassy, decent head. Taste is a bit sweet with notes of caramel. Wet mouthfeel. Overall, pretty good!

This is probably still swill, but it really isn't that bad. They used to promote this on sale at my hometown liquor store for $6/ six-pack....bottles too! For that price I paid when it first came around..definitely worth it, but for the price they are charging now....I think I'd pass. Pretty malty with slight bitterness. Maybe minimal skunkness, haven't had it in a while though. I can see myself ordering this for a few pesos at some beachside bar in Mexico.

UPDATED: APR 2, 2018 Disappointing. I was recommended this beer by a waiter in a restaurant in Mexico City after ordering a craft stout in their offer and stating that I like it a lot. Unfortunately this turned out to have nothing in common with stout nor good beers. It's just another commercial lager with a bit more smoke in the taste, with all the problems of those commercial beers.

Mild hints of caramel and toasted bread offset by corn sweetness and a metallic banana back end. Not undrinkable, but hopefully avoidable.

Decent head when poured into pint glass. Beautiful color great malt flavor for a lager. Refreshing medium body taste. Top rate. If you want more body or hoppiness, drink an ale. I can't think of a better mexican lager. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On bottle. Pours clear brown, with small foam. The scent is sweet, notes of dates. The taste is really sweet, raisins, dates and prunes. Watery.

Way too sweet. Pours medium body with below average carbonation. Too much of a caramel taste to it, and not enough roast. Not well balanced. Lingers way too long.

35.5 cl. bottle @ Home. Aroma: very weak aromas here. Very subtle hints of caramel, toasted malts, burnt caramel, brown sugar. Appearance: brown to mahogany color with reddish and amber overtones. Crystal clear. Quite creamy beige to light brown foam with medium thickness, low to medium retention and low Brussels' lacing. Taste: low to medium sweetness, low bitterness, low sourness. Flavors are more sweet at first and more bitter toward the finish: toasted malts, light caramel, some brown sugar, burnt caramel, very light citrus. Balanced but flavors are quite weak. Palate: light to medium body, watery texture, medium carbonation, medium long dry finish with low to medium bitterness and the same aforementioned flavors. A little bit of astringency. Alcohol is not noticeable. Overall: not bad appearance with a pretty color. Aromas are too weak and almost non-existent. Flavors are more intense but not specially pleasant. Not very good beer.

Pours mahogany with thick, foamy head. Aroma is caramel and brown sugar. Taste is bitter hops and molasses with hints of spice. Finish is nondescript.
