COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dunks Ferry Dunkelweizen – We stay with the German wheat beer theme for our Fall seasonal. Much like it’s Summertime brother, Dunks Ferry Dunkelweizen has a unique banana and spicy clove character but this time paired with a chewy, bready (dare we say banana bread) malt backbone. Again, we hop this German wheat beer with Hallertau and Tettnanger hops. 5.2% ABV.

DATE: September 30, 2017... OCCASION: post apple-fest at Jill and Austin's... GLASSWARE: Schneider Edel-Weisse pokal... a dark brown body emits enough light to reveal bubbly activity that manifests in the massive, off-white three-finger blanket of foam... eventually, cave scrawls articulate lacing across its sky... clove and banana, some allspice and sunflower seed--a thick earthiness pervades, while the hops offer a vague citrus and pine... the dough is aromatic and sweet... first sip buzzes with a mellow activity, while smoothly finishing at the throat... this couldn't be more easy-drinking... the dunkel aspect adds a tea-like consistency... the banana and clove combination is bookended by lightly hopped citrus and doughy bread malts that are fresh and aromatic... a winner that reeks of autumn, with its dank earthiness...

Sampled at GABF 2015. In the tasting glass amber with an off-white head. Nose of rich malts and banana. Medium plus in body. Smooth mouth feel. Flavor is roasted malts with dark fruit, banana, and there is clove in the finish. Very nice.

Big bottle. A bready dunkelweizen, it may be banana bread but it’s not crazy. Cloves and earth components dominate and it has some hops.

Pours a cloudy and very dark chestnut brown color that’s completely opaque with mahogany edges and a thin off-white head that immediately settles into a thin ring. Not much in the way of lacing. Spicy clove-like aroma with a weird acetone/solvent presence that is not usually associated with the style. There’s also a strong bready yeast character along with subtle banana and a sweet chocolate malt notes. The chemical presence is really throwing me off, overpowering the sweet chocolate banana bread notes that make this style appealing. On the fuller end of medium body with a prominent zesty clove presence up front but again, there’s an artificial chemical-like flavor coming in mid-palate that throw things off a bit. It’s not as offensive as in the nose but it takes away from the spice, banana bread and sweet malts. The bread and banana flavors stand out more than in the nose as do the sweet chocolate malt notes. Sweet chocolate with caramel, toffee and biscuit. Again, the metallic solvent like character shows up in the finish, lingering a bit after the swallow. Overall, this beer has some decent flavor but it’s buried underneath a mess of other things that don’t work well for the style.

Pours very dark brown with a tan head. The aroma has lots of malt and bread. The flavor has a nice malty sweetness with a little more hops than expected. Very nice indeed. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Nice yeasty blend. Done well in scent and taste. A little light and could use more flavor, but it has a heavy saison taste to it. A little too light for the dunkel style. Nice color. Tap
