Sampled on draught at the John Baird, Muswell Hill. A dark brown colour with reddish tints. Foamy tan head but only soft carbonation. Aroma of fresh bread and milk chocolate. The taste is of dark fruit cake, with hints of brown sugar and mild liquorice. Lingering bitter finish. A good dark ale. Definitely not a porter. theprof (958) - Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, ENGLAND - APR 18, 2016
Cask. Pours dark brown with ruby notes. Thin lace top. Aroma dates and malt. Tastes rich with a mild fruitcake quality and lingering licorice. There’s a bit of the Old Growler in all of us. The_Osprey (7998) - Richmond, Greater London, ENGLAND - APR 2, 2016
Cask at The Angel, Islington as ’Nethergate Old Growler’, 5%. Very dark brown, still, dense foamy tan head endures. Aroma is light and airy up-front, some bread and chocolate as the glass drains. Body is light, smooth, soft carbonation. Taste is tangy and spicy, burnt cake, rum sweetness, dry into the finish with a little booze showing up. Slow drinking and spicy. Grew on me. This is very much an old ale, not a porter as stated.
