To this very day, Germans and some other Central Europeans brew to conform to tax classifications based on gravity and alcohol content. In Germany a century or more ago, Abzug would have fallen into the lower end of the Vollbier classification, and perhaps the higher end of Schankbier. In Austria, its elders would have been Vienna and Marzen. Abzug’s gravity is lower, and its lagering time shorter, but in all respects it remains a tasty, quenching lager.

Malt: U.S. 6-row, Belgian Vienna and flaked rye

Yeast: House Lager (San Francisco)

IBU: 26
Color: 3.4 degree Lovibond SRM

2/19/2011: NABC Abzug - "A Common Man’s Bier"... Aroma: Honey malty sweetness. Appearance: Light amber color, hazy; head is off-white to beige in color; speckle lacing. Flavor: Wet grains, seems stale (like cardboard); alfalfa, grass, and hay hoppiness; strange sweetness paired with a very mild bitterness. Palate: Medium-light and gritty. Overall: This is a weird brew and my least favorite of all of the beers I have tasted so far...

Draught sample (3.8% ABV; 26 IBU) at New Albanian Brewing Company in New Albany, IN. Rating #14 for this beer.

ChefPtomaine (3) - - OCT 30, 2012 does not count
Lacking in just about every character. Somewhat fizzy, barely a nose and tasted like a pair of gym socks soaked in toilet water. EVERYONE at my table passed on this.

decaturstevo (6343) - decatur, Tennessee, USA - DEC 6, 2010
Pale yellow pour with creamy white head and lace. Wheaty malt and paper. Sweet wheat with a light sour finish. Medium bodied with good carbonation.

Tmoney99 (15223) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - MAY 20, 2010
Draft. Poured clear golden color with a medium frothy white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate sweet balanced aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met with an above average brew.

On tap. Pours a clear gold with a slight orange hue and a thin white head. Aroma has a strong sweet grain smell with underlying grassy hops. Flavor is light with light hops and sweet grains.

Rynoplasty (700) - Louisville, Kentucky, USA - JAN 7, 2010
Pours yellow gold with a white head. Aroma is light bready malts, a little bit of banana and some earthy hops. Flavor is light malts, with a surprising banana like flavor is well. Nice session brew.

On tap at brewpub
My second pint was another light beer. This was a bit different but still another fabulous session beer with which to while away the hours. If New Albanian can continue to crank out small batches of lighter styles like this they move up even further on my list of respected brewpubs. Hopefully with time they can scale them beyond their two outlets and some limited bars in the Kentucky area.

Aroma / Appearance - Transparent and carbonated this bubbles with life. Citrus, lemon, and wheat form an approachable harmony of light hops that gives it more depth than just watered down alcohol.

Flavor / Palate - The hops are faint but noticeable. Working my way down the pint I picked up wheat bread and little else. The grainy texture makes it a surrogate for water; at just under 4% you could probably consume several of these easily without wearing down the palate. Ultimately I would switch to something with more body but this is a fine starting point.

lithy (2996) - Capital of Appalachia, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 22, 2009
Clear yellow, whitish cover. Light sweet aroma. Taste is grassy, light sweetness.

I’m suprised that with the ABV I got as much of a buzz as I did. This beer is hops, hops and more hops. It suprises me again that this is a wheat beer.
