Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Black Lager uses a lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

Pours cola brown with slight tan head. Scent is roasted malt and chocolate. Tastes matches scent. Slightly sweet, and underwhelming. I do like how well it is blended though. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Not the best aroma I’ve ever smelled in a brown lager, but brilliant chocolate flavour, nice body and creamy beer head. Very enjoyable beer! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Full of flavor but too much “chocolate” in it for me. This mich flavor but a good bitter would be a champion ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

BB 17 Dec 17. Poured a dark cola brown with a one-finger light tan head that diminished slowly to a cap that laced well. Carbonation high, lively and fine to medium. Aroma of sweet caramel, dark fruits and milk chocolate, a bit like a porter. Taste is of moderately sweet caramel, dark fruits and subtle hints of roasted malts all with low bitterness. Light body. Smooth with a lingering moderately sweet finish.

From Jan 2006 Poured from bottle(room temp) a pitch black with a huge head of foam that dissipates slowly leaving a fine layer and some lacing. The smell is of roasted malt and there's a bit of a bitterness there as well...I like it. The taste is dominated by roasted malt at first, with a noticeable oatmeal flavour that brings out some sweet notes coming through midway. The finish brings back the roastiness and is teamed with a bit of bitterness that makes for an excellent overall tasting beer. Bottom line: Here's an unusual style of beer that has a lot of good things going on....I recommend it!

A fine beer. I probably wouldn't go buy a sixpack of it but I would enjoy it if I did. Big malty taste, lightly carbonated, lightly hopped. Very drinkable, improves as it warms. Somewhat nutty with a dry finish that has notes of biscuit ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

From bottle in shaker. Pours reddish brown with thick frothy head and modest choc malt aroma. Tasty and smooth with a bit of malt sweetness in the finish.
