Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Black Lager uses a lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

Deep brown with almost no head. Suprisingly thin for such a dark beer. Chocolate and coffee malts, but overall the aroma is lacking. There’s nothing on the nose, even after warming it up a bit. In my mind it doesn’t justify the high ratings others have given.

Malty aroma, dark but clear with minimal head, medium bodied with hint of sweetness on the finish. Black lager isn't my go-to style but this is pretty nice. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours dark brown from the bottle and leaves a foamy, off white head that lingers. Aroma is toast, chocolate, caramel. Taste is lightly sweet with some mild bitterness in the finish. Body is medium with a rich, creamy, roasted character. Overall very nice.

Bottle. Nose is citrus, earthy, chocolate, coffee. Palate is citrus, chocolate, toffee, bread. Pretty gritty, but still a nice brew.

On tap at Quaker Steak. Pours a lovely cola brown. Lighter nose of dry fruit and chocolate malted milk. Flavors of fig, chocolate and sight coffee. For a darker beer this has a pleasant light mouthfeel. Perfect for sipping or chugging.

It’s a good beer. It’s a beer I’d have again. It’s got the toasty malt mouthfeel and flavor of a Porter and Stout with the light body of a lager. There is flavor here to have.

Bottle from IGA, Cookeville, Tennessee. Dark brown with a thin head. The dark lager malt is perhaps more stated in its nose than taste, but the latter has a nice smoothness about it.

12oz bottle. Midnight black, frothy light tan head. Toasty malt, bready nose. Flavors are roasted malt, caramel sweetness, nuts, pleasant bittering hops. Delicious, balanced roasted finish. Very tasty.

Draft at Cornerstone. Pours pitch black with tan head into a pint glass. Aroma is roasted malts, light coffee, and light licorice. Flavor includes dark chocolate, dark fruits, and some coffee. Ends with a robust bitter/roasty finish. Would buy this again!

Pours cola brown with a creamy off-white head. Aroma of toffee, biscuit, and chocolate. Toffee and chocolate sweetness with some bread. Creamy body with solid lacing. Very nice beer.

Rated on 20170519.
Pours clear dark mahogany color with a large off-white head. Malty and nutty aroma with hints of cocoa, mild hops. Flavor has caramel and nutty dry malts, mild orange notes, subtle resin and some chocolaty bitterness at the end. A bit mellow, easy to drink though.
