Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Bottle. So far I have not been a big fan of beers brewed with Belgian yeasts, but I keep trying; so here goes. Pours a brilliant copper with creamy off-white head. Flawless. Belgian yeast aroma is a bit overpowering at first, but after the beer had a chance to settle, the aroma has become fairly pleasant. Aroma is mostly of apples and pears. Some phenolics. The Belgian flavor is not too pronounced. A big, malty backbone helps keep the yeast flavors in line. Some butterscotch flavors, too. Low-ish carbonation and a smooth, almost overly slick body. Still, I am more impressed with this beer than I thought I would be. I would try this again.

Pours a brown with a red glow. Ok lacing and white head. Smells of malt and dark fruit. Flavor is dry with malts, fruit, and hints of chocolate and banana. Aftertaste is not great. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a clear medium caramel brown with an off white ring. Medium body with some lacing. Aroma of sweet dark fruit and light Belgian spices. Tastes more like a Scotch ale with a dry peat moss earthy flavor than an Abbey. Not really that enjoyable.

12 oz bottle into a La Chouffe stemmed tulip on 31st Dec 2017 at my daughters in California. Deep brown body, tanned affair on top. Malts rule the brew with the nose being slightly chocolate like, the taste also leaning towards a chocolate flavour. Decent and very like the Abbey Dubbels I drink when in Brugge.

True to style and delicious. Dark, color, and dark fruit, and satisfaction awaits, filling, satisfying, rich. Of course I like the style and this sticks to it.

Rating #2747 2016.08.05 - Draught @revolutionyyc. Dark brown/amber colour with a tan head. Aroma is soft fruits, ripened berry. raisin. Taste is light, grainy and sweet fruits. Quite pleasantly spiced and extremely smooth on the finish. Dark, lighter body and quite nice.

12oz bottle best by 21OCT18 from the "blend it yourself" variety pack. This will be my 2nd Abbey of the year. nose is leafy chocolate with mild candi. Sip adds the more conventional flavors for the style. sweet-ish. mellow banana. kinda flat.

Dark brown pour with a nice and thick rocky head. Aroma is of caramel and banana. Flavor is sugary, with some chocolate and banana notes. Nice creamy body. Pretty good!
