Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Bottled. Lovely beer, and a lovely bottle, too. Pours a very big cream colored head that slowly settles into a coppry body. Smell has enough Belgian sugar for everyone. The usual Belgian yeast esters of coriander, and a slight hint of banana toward the finish. There’s also a hint of horseblanket that becomes apparent the further down the glass you go.

12-ounce bottle pours clear deep burgundy with a spritz of tan head and lacing. Aroma: brown sugar, cherries, dark dried fruits. Flavor: dates, figs, cherries, plums, caramelized brown sugar, hazelnuts. Mouthfeel: medium-bodied, creamy, yet with a dry finish.

From Dec 2005 Poured from bottle(room temp) a deep amber gold with a very small head that dissipated slowly leaving a fine solid layerand lots of nice lacing. The smell is very fruity with notes of banana, plum, and a clove aroma as well. Very inviting! The taste is a wonderful blend of the notes I mentioned in the smell all working together with sweet malt and a nice yeasty infusion that makes it so darn drinkable. This is a very nice Belgian style dubbel that I can thoroughly recommend!

Pours brown from the bottle and leaves a thick, creamy head. Aroma is roasted nuts, toast, hints of chocolate, cherry, a bit of spice — mostly clove. Taste is bitter, a touch sour, plenty of spice. A bit harsh. A touch of toffee sweetness to round this one out would raise it to the next level, but this is lacking entirely, leaving it feeling unrounded in places. Body is medium with a prickly carbonation. Okay, but not great.

Bottle from Total Wine, South Richmond. Pours clear brown with a small off-white head. Aroma is similar to an unspiced nut bread. Nothing special but inoffensive. Flavor is caramel, but not strong caramel. Browning leaves, kinda nutty. It reminds me more of a more brown ale than anything. It’s fine, but top 50 in the style? Really?

It was nice trying this one, I liked its yeasty taste and its amber red appearance. However, we do not see this old fashion bottle a lot.
