COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
When we set out to brew, we use imagination and salvation to guide us- not necessarily style guidelines. Its the Belgian way. So, Ameri-Belgo and IPA both being styles, the branding begged for New Belgium whimsy to liven things up. Hmmm Belgo sounds like a Belgian disco. Hops like to party. Next thing you know, we bust out a disco-ball and brewers started groovin. Hops started hoppin. Add in an authentic Trappist yeast strain and the place brewed into a frenzy of citrus hoppy folly.

Note: Moved to the Explore Series in 2011, making it available year-round.

Sort of a citrus/Belgian funk in the aroma. Appearance is golden with a frothy head - think traditional IPA. Tastes like an IPA, with just a faint banana profile insinuating the Belgian inspiration. I would like to see more, in fact. I get too much Ranger IPA here for a beer claiming to be "Belgian Style".

Clear, deep golden with a lacing white head. Aroma of Belgian yeast, citrusy hops, and a little spice. Taste is spicy with a citrus finish. Not bad.

Pours an amber color with a white head. Aroma is pine and floral hops with some belgian yeast and banana. Flavor is interesting. The Belgian yeast comes out strong up front but finishes bitter with the pine and floral hops. Never really had anything quite like it.

Really nice take on this style. Nice Belgian yeast aromas and good hop profile.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. The appearance is a slightly hazy amber color with a medium sized white head. The aroma is hop driven. The taste matches the nose. A solid beer.

2015 BJCP Category: 21B Specialty IPA: Belgian IPA

AROMA: Orange citrus is the prominent note; slight floral or candy scent. An odd, difficult-to-identify aroma (fusel alcohol?) is also present. 8/12

APPEARANCE: Bright copper/flame orange; mostly clear body with CO2 visible. Moderate, brite white froth. Good lacing. 3/3

FLAVOR: Light spicy taste at first - mild clove and peppery phenols from Belgian yeast. Base malt is generic pale; fairly clean and unsweetened. American hops impart orange citrus flavor on the finish with candy flavor as well. Fairly strong, dry bitterness is tolerable. No alcohol taste. 16/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body and carbonation. Soft texture and smooth finish. No alcohol warmth. Hops linger momentarily but are not astringent. 5/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Good combination of base AIPA recipe and Belgian yeast character. Itd be awesome if not for that off aroma. 8/10

TOTAL SCORE: 40/50

Poured golden with a thin, bubbly head. Faint floral aroma. Grassy taste. Not a lot of complexity. Somewhat disappointing.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance The beer pours a clear golden color with a two finger head of big white foam. The head has a great level of retention, slowly fading over time to leave a fantastic level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell The aroma of the brew is massive of a coriander and yeasty smells with tons of biscuit and clove aromas as well. Along with these smells comes some lighter notes of candied sugar and some grass. Taste-The taste begins with a crisp biscuit flavor that also has some big notes of a yeasty and coriander spice. As the taste moves on, the cracker is meet with some slightly sweeter tastes of orange, candied sugar, and caramel, all while some other light hoppy flavors of grass and herb begin developing on the tongue. More toward the middle and the end of the taste the hop really starts cranking it up with more herb, grass, some citrus, as well as some pine all come to the tongue. In the end, with more spice of coriander and clove coming to the tongue, one is left with a crisp and clean, yeasty, and decently dank hopped taste to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel The body of the brew is on the slightly thinner side with a carbonation level that is rather high for an IPA of 7.0 %. For the Belgium style that has all the yeast, cracker, and dank hop, the feel is rather nice and creates a rather dangerously drinkable brew. Overall This is one tasty brew. New Belgium always does a good job with their Belgium style brews in my opinion. I wish they would make this one a mainstay, being in the company of the triple and abbey. Quite enjoyable!!

Bought the New Belgium Folly pack to try this beer. Glad I did although I am not overwhelmed. Poured in a New Belgium tulip glass, fittingly so. Cool dark yellow, nice foamy top and interesting slightly sweet aroma. Coriander and the sweetness are truly Belgian. Then the IPA takes over, pine and a bit hoppy. Some resin on the tongue later. Involved beer, curious, kudos to NB for reaching out there.

Aroma is very sweet and a little floral. Flavor has mild sweetness but is muted with a bit too much water. Aftertaste is massively bitter. Unbalanced IMO.
