Named in honor of our founder Jeffs bike trip through Belgium, Fat Tire Amber Ale marks a turning point in the young electrical engineers home brewing. Belgian beers use a far broader palette of ingredients (fruits, spices, esoteric yeast strains) than German or English styles. Jeff found the Belgian approach freeing. Upon his return, Jeff created Fat Tire and Abbey Belgian Ale, (assuming Abbey would be his big gun). He and his wife, Kim traveled around sampling their homebrews to the public. Fat Tires appeal quickly became evident. People liked everything about it. Except the name. Fat Tire won fans is in its sense of balance: toasty, biscuit-like malt flavors coasting in equilibrium with hoppy freshness.

I do not think that the belgian yeast flavor goes at all with this beer. I first tasted this beer with such anticipation as I heard so much good about it. What a letdown! There were 3 of us and we couldnt even finish 1/2 of a bottle. I dont see what the deal is with this beer.

Can. Amber colour, mediumsized off-white head. Aroma is caramel, some fruits, mild toffee and some spruce. Flavour is caramel, fruits, toffee, mild quite nice balance. Sweetish aftertaste. Not that typical as for a US amber ale.

Welcome to Maine New Belgium. 12z Pours a medium golden with a finger of eggshell foam. Nose is light toasted biscuit, hint of citrus and grass. Palate is malt yet clean with focused grain upfront, doughy biscuit, woodchips, light caramel and a balanced lingering bitterness with notes of light citrus and grass.

From can in tapered shaker. Pours clear amber with two-finger frothy head and aroma of fruit bread underpinned by earthy hops. A nice malt-driven ale...I still remember my first one 20 years ago stood out at a time where lagers dominated the US market. Not surprisingly, this has survived the Pacific journey in better shape than the bottled version.
