New Belgium Lips of Faith - Biere de Garde

RATINGS: 217   WEIGHTED AVG: 3.44/5   IBU: 18   EST. CALORIES: 270   ABV: 9%
Famous in Michigan for farmhouse ales, our friends at Brewery Viviant introduced us to their biere de garde ale yeast strain. From there, we imagined a slightly tart, intentionally dry beer with hints of bergamot citrus that pairs perfectly with French cheeses.

Clear golden pour, thin white head and light sticky lacing .... aroma of funky hops, light fruity yeast, bergamot is evident ..... taste is a little funky and or bergamot zest (orange peel) with a fruity yeast as well ... tart with a citrusy bite ... finishes dry and tart ... interesting flavors and the abv is hidden very well .... mouthfeel is lively .... nice change of pace brew

(bottle) light orange-gold with white head and some lace. Aroma is a bit earthy, citrus, spice. Flavor is citrus, spice, earthyness; on the dry side with a bit of a tart finish.

On tap: The aroma consists of citrus, lemon, orange peel, and light floral notes. It’s a transparent gold with a small white head that leaves a thin sheet of lacing on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with citrus, honey, and a hint of bubblegum. The finish has orange peel and light floral notes. It’s light-medium bodied with somewhat carbonation and mouthfeel.

Bottle. Pours a slightly unclear orange with medium white head that subside pretty quickly. Smell is funky, orange citrus and some spice perhaps . The taste is initially sweet orange, and then leads to some funky fruity yeast that never overpowers, but there is a muddled finish that last. The alcohol actually pokes out as well. As the beer goes on I went from liking a good bit to it just being ok.

22 oz bottle. Pours golden with a white head. Aroma’s a little rubbery at first, to be honest, moving into more bubble gum and a little biscuit and candy citrus, perfume. Flavor is heavy on orange peel, herbal flavor, touch of green apple and bits of bubble gum, hinting at a few shades "darker" flavors like caramel and grape. Pretty enjoyable.

Pint on tap. Clear-ish, medium-yellow color, no head or lacing. Mild aroma, citrus-y grapefruit and peach nectar. Taste is an awesome blend of traditional ale and something sweeter. Floral-herbal notes with a measured amount of sweetness, dry too. Citrus-y but not sour. Great mouthfeel and linger. I wish I had had some cheese to pair with it.

SphinxTX (2875) - Mata Gorda, Texas, USA - DEC 4, 2012
Bottle. Pours a hazy gold with white head. Aroma has some nice funky notes, a little herbal, grassy, notes of ripe grapefruit. Flavor is much the same, off-dry with a light tartness. Light to medium body with fizzy carbonation. Overall, pretty tasty.

Beaver (1799) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - DEC 3, 2012
22 oz bottle. Pours clear straw gold with a small creamy white head that retains well and leaves a little lacing.

The aroma is musty stinky, almost rotting, oranges with a little bready malt.

The flavor is sweet oranges and musty yeast with a kind of dry and lightly bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, kind of odd - sweet musty oranges with a dry bitter, kind of off finish.

The beer pours a hazy golden yellow color with a white head. The aroma is full of grain and wheat, with a hint of orange thrown in. The flavor is more of the same. I get a lot of juicy orange notes, as well as a ton of coriander and wheat. This beer tastes like a Belgian witbier on steroids. I like most of what I taste but there is too much coriander in the beer for me to be a huge fan. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

marcus (10222) - Sacramento, California, USA - DEC 2, 2012
Bottle from Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours clear blonde with a nice orange white head and a fruity aroma. There is a fruity light malt flavor that is a bit sour with a strange spiced finish.
