New Belgium Lips of Faith - Biere de Garde

RATINGS: 217   WEIGHTED AVG: 3.44/5   IBU: 18   EST. CALORIES: 270   ABV: 9%
Famous in Michigan for farmhouse ales, our friends at Brewery Viviant introduced us to their biere de garde ale yeast strain. From there, we imagined a slightly tart, intentionally dry beer with hints of bergamot citrus that pairs perfectly with French cheeses.

Bottle at home with Nik Da Sneak. Pour is clear, golden orange with a fluffy white head and great lacing. Bread, dough, orange, citrus, light spice, and straw in the aroma. Lightly tart, lemon peel, dough, pepper, orange peel, citrus, and clove with a spicy bitter finish. Medium mouthfeel with high carbonation. Pretty easy drinking and the alcohol is hidden beautifully. Not bad, but nothing to get excited about.

I don’t know what to think about this quite yet. It’s definitely tart and has some orange and lemon too. A bit of funk and some strained characters as well. It’s just eh to me.

A hazy orangish yellow beer with a pure white head, but small for a belgian style beer. The aroma is safflower and citrus peel. The taste is yeasty, belgian, bitter sweet and has some grapefruit notes. There is no sign of 9% anywhere. Tastes like a very good sessionable saison. This could be dangerous.

Slightly dusty funky nose, turns lemony as it warms. Nice gold, with no head. Bit boozy and hot. Dried hay, lemon and orange zest citrus, and spice like grains of paradise. Good, not great.

Draft sample. Gold in colour with strong carbonation. Aroma is straight up Fruit Loops cereal, along with peppery spice and a bit of pale malt. More of that fruity cereal thing going on in the mouth, along with more herbal spices, citrus peel, and earthy hops. Super dry and fairly refreshing for a 9% beer. Better than expected.

This thing smells like pure funk. I’m surprised that I had the funk in me to try this funky beer. Smells kind of moldy with floral and citrus. Odd. It tastes good. A bitter front with some odd flowery taste followed by a lemon. All in all it is not bad. But it is such a different taste for me.

Clear golden with a small foamy white head. Funky earthy aroma of frosted corn flakes and fresh baked biscuits. The flavor was also pretty cereal oriented with that Kellogs Corn Flakes kinda tone with some powdered sugar and earthy pale blonde maltiness, and a dry yet fruity apricot subtlety. Drinkable, but weird.

Bottle from Specs. Pale, clear, dirty water looking amber with a small whitish head. Aroma of bread, barnyard, light citrus, and earth. Taste is very bready and yeasty with a hint of sweet fruit. Alcohol is subtle. Medium body.

Bomber from Whole Foods in Davis, CA. Pours hazy gold with a foamy off-white head. Aroma is yeasty and earthy with a touch of citrus. Med body. Foamy carb. Flavor is yeasty, a little earthy, has a touch of spice and/or zest. It finishes a bit sweeter than expected. Drinkable, fairly tasty, but not as earthy as hoped.
