COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Biere De Mars is New Belgium’s exploration of the classic French and Belgian brews celebrating the half-winter, half-spring month of March. Our bottle-conditioned version, however, goes where no BIERE DE MARS has gone before. After gazing at its cloudy, yet glowing orange hue, prepare yourself for a celestial collaboration of oats, wheat, barley malt and lemon verbena, all of which is set into orbit by unidentified flying yeast strains.

UPDATED: OCT 6, 2010 Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy medium amber. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (caramel, malt syrup), lightly hoppy (apricot), with notes of nutmeg, pumpkin, and detergent. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery/syrupy texture, lively carbonation. Odd aroma reminiscent of Thanksgiving time beers, squashy and nutmeggy. Some flaws too, though...crude malt character that’s more or less New Belgium’s trademark, and some soap. Sweetness lingers uncomfortably long into the finish; difficult to drink much of.

(Rating #4675)

Keg @ Billy Jack’s. Hazy light amber, small head. The nose is sweet caramel, malty sweetness. a bit of vanilla and marshmallow. The taste is spicy Belgian yeast. Dried wood.herbs. Some Mint. Caramel. Not much in the way of hop flavor. Full body, a bit hot. Overall, solid.

On draught at Sycamore. Light, orange, cloudy, and quite tasty. Some citrus in there and a very drinkable take on the style.

Lips of Faith bomber. Poured lightly hazy medium orange with a short cap of off-white head. The aroma picked up coriander and oranges upfront with a malted wheat base.. warm and a touch syrupy. The flavor found caramel and biscuity malts at the core with coriander, orange zest, and white pepper around.. again syrupy-sweet.. tangy and increasingly funky from the Brett as it warmed up.. the dry, funky finish picked up an unexpected dose of chocolate. Medium-bodied and spicy on the palate, but there was still too much sweetness. This was OK.

Bomber. A fluffy off white head is three fingers and slow to fade. Very hazy golden brown with very active bubbles floating up. This is nicely easy to drink. Tastes of pepper spice, oatmeal, malts, cereal, barnyard, and yeast. It is smooth in the mouth. Some fruit and mild bitterness in the after taste. This a nice intro to my weekend. A little something for everyone here. Nice flavor and a nice beer for those not heavily into craft.

Pours a hazy orange golden with a short-lived white head. Nicely semi-sweet and spiced aroma with hints of Belgian yeast. Body is very smooth with a pleasant, earthy dry malty profile and a mild hop balance. Very drinkable and with good style adherence. Thanks whaleman!

22 oz bottle courtesy of Binnys South Loop and shared with a couple friends. Pours a well carbonated sunshine amber, decent white head that laces pretty well, fairly lively carbonated body. Aromas throw a combo of belgian yeast, a touch of spice, vanilla and honey. Initial is a bit floral, a bit funky but that doesn’t play a huge role. Vanilla, honey, belgian yeasty spice.. Flowers. Light, a touch of cinnamon, clove. Finishes dry, lightly bitter. Underlying sweetness and spice sticks to the palate. A decent effort, just a strange mishmash of styles for me.
