Cascara Quad is a dark, strong and surprisingly delicate ale made with dates and coffee cherries. Channeling the Trappist tradition, it’s brewed with an ethereal malt bill, and spiced with the fruit of the coffee bean (cascara). The aroma brings dates, cherries and pipe tobacco right to the nose and builds layers with hints of spice and fruity Belgian yeast. Once on the palate, Cascara Quad starts swinging clove, fig and molasses. Each sip offers sweet warmth, deep complexity and fleeting dryness.

Hops: Hallertauer Hersbrucker-Nobel, Styrian-Golding-Nobel
Malts: Pale, Munich, Caramel Munich, Biscuit, Black
Fruits/Spice: Belgium Amber Candy Sugar, Date Sugar, Cascara Tea
Body: Medium-Heavy
Aroma: Ripe figs, raisins, plums, black cherries, toffee, chocolate, pipe tobacco, rich Corinthian leather and leather bound books.
Mouthfeel: Starts big and smooth, finishes still smooth yet the cascara tea and higher ABV will bring a nice dry warm end to this epic novel.
Flavor: Sweet and rich, huge complex overall taste.
Visual: Brooding, dark, cloudy berry brown with tan head.

On tap at Smoke & Barrel. Excessively sweet. Yuck. Dark fruits and a bit of dates. Then a lot of brown sugar and accompanying sweetness.

Bomber from Imbibe Wine. Nose is cherries, fig newtons, and toffee. Clear rust with a smaller, lightly lacing, beige head. Flavor is tobacco, figs, cherries, and a hnt of white pepper and alcohol.

Interesting brew. Pours a dark brown color, small tannish head. Lots of flavors in this beer. Spices, cherries, leather, hay, dates, figs, herbal hops, vegetal flavors. Fun but a bit too much happening.

Medium tan color. Mild carbonation. Cherries very evident. Dates somewhat evident. Coffee not evident. Lighter and sweeter than anticipated. Not as good as expected.

UPDATED: JAN 17, 2014 Had this on tap at the East Nashville Beer Festival. Good aroma of raisins (which I like in quads). The flavors of rich malt and dark fruit are also welcome. Unfortunately the experience is tarnished by some hot alcohol in the finish. This beer will probably be fantastic with some age and time to smooth out. Maybe I will find a bottle to set aside for a while. 22oz bottle. less dark fruit aromas that I found so attractive, but also far less hot alcohol. seems both faded, but also smoother.

Brown sugar, caramel, cinnamon aroma. Deep brown with a copper hue. Extremely sweet flavors of candied caramel, roasted sugar, amber malts and burnt toffee. Bland coffee/mocha finish. Overall, very simple. Way too sweet caramel, toffee, candy flavors. It’s like sucking on sugar. I’d give this a D- rating.

Mahogany colored pour with an off-white head. The nose is highly sweet and quite boozy as well. Alcohol, chocolate, dates, plums, and raisins. Brown sugar, hints of vanilla, and tea. Big sweetness and alcohol to the flavor, too. Brown sugar, dates, plums, raisins, and cherries. Some chocolate, brown sugar, caramel, and vanilla. Mild earthiness and perhaps tobacco from the tea.

Pours dark amber with a frothy head but doesn’t have too complex of an aroma. Basically only sweet notes on both the nose and the tongue, Finishes weakly. The description does more for the beer than the beer itself does.

22. Pours a murky rubied dark amber with a dense and creamy tan head. Sweet sticky nose, some caramel and a bit of sugary fruitiness. Sticky thin body with soft carb. Lots of sticky caramel, a little coffee bitterness, some mild fruitiness. Thin, thrown together, and disappointing.
