UPDATED: OCT 16, 2015 December 7th, 2013 - Served at Livewire, I sat down with the collaboration Paardebloem, where even amongst the busy scents of the bar, I catch heavy whiffs of sweet cereal, Captain Crunch, and sweet carrots. The palate is on the lighter side, and brings some floral touches and an herbal finish. The sugars are more roasted carrot and ham in nature, and the overall effect of the flavor is sweet and sticky, maybe too much so. But it fits the bill for a bar filled with dim colored lights and loud music, itself sweet and loud.
July 18th, 2013 (3.8) - Dandelions in beer - it has all the trappings of a hipster, super sustainable, grown-in-my-backyard kind of brew. The whole dandelion angle reminds me of a foraging phase I went through a few years ago, walking through parks and along green belts, keeping an eye out for edible plants in an urban environment. Dandelion greens were one of the easier finds, and made a nice bitter counter note in some homemade muffins. Its sensible for the stuff to appear in a beer, too, where bitter and botanical flavors are often tasty complements to sugars and alcohols. Though I think this bed isn’t bringing in the greens so much as the petals, which I also find more than edible. The color of the brew is much darker and more orange than a dandelion proper, with a deep blush of red in the center of the glass. The aroma is light and sweet, with touches of tangerine and cream, as well as the cream-custard you find in Japanese shu-cream sweets, followed by a brief whiff of almonds and marzipan. The flavor is much sweeter than the aroma, and with little to no detectable alcohol. It begins with strong flavors of mango and papaya until I reach the mid-taste, where the fruit notes drop to a much lighter, airier passion fruit flavor. It’s a tropical farmer’s market in a glass, and I’m impressed. Treat this as a dessert beer, though it isn’t that overwhelmingly sweet. But it does bring a lot of nice fruit flavors to bear which might go well after food, or paired with a light, sweet treat at the end of the day. As for the dandelions, I can’t find any to pluck in the aroma or the nose, but they must be doing their work. Hazy gold beer, decent off white head. Smooth palate, slightly dry. Mild fine carbonation. Mild and sweet generic tinned fruit juice. Floral sweetness. Super mild spice. Light semi dry finish. A nice idea but it’s borderline stodgy, really wants something to give it zip. Hides the abv well though!
bottle @ Party Source / Bellevue KY --- enjoy by May 2014. Cloudy medium amber with a full head cover, broken curtain of lace. Taste is caramel malt doused with light spice and yeasty biscuit, moving to a bitter grass finish that is light and proper for this brew. I had this at Global Brew. Pours gold with a white head. Taste belgian yeast, floral, sweet. I thought this was pretty good. I would definitely drink this again.

At first pour, Paardebloem is a beautiful, dark, almost creamy looking orange, with an extremely frothy head that lingers. It is floral/grassy and citrusy, even a little woodsy. It says ’best enjoyed by May 2014,’ and I believe this is why the beer appears to be so flat to me. It’s a fairly light beer, the more I drink the more flavors I seem to notice.
