In a never-ending quest to create new beers and defy category, New Belgium Brewing and Brewerij Boon of Belgium have partnered together again to create Transatlantique Kriek - a spontaneously fermented lambic ale made with Polish cherries. This authentic kriek beer began life in the oaken vessels at Frank Boon’s brewery in the Lembeek region of Belgium. After more than two years aging, Boon’s offering shipped across the Atlantic and found its way to the intuitive palate of New Belgium’s Brewmaster Peter Bouckaert. After much sampling and internal consultation, Peter and his brew staff created a full-bodied golden lager to round out the light-bodied kriek. The cherry nose gives way to a pleasingly sour flash across the palate that rolls gently into a slightly sweet finish. Crisp, effervescent carbonation keeps the mouthfeel bright and delightfully tingly. Previously 6.3

Bottle, from Liquor World, opened for pre-birthday celebrations. Pretty cranberry red, smallish white layer of bubbles. Buttery vanilla cake, old-fashioned cherry candy, thrift store wool sweaters. Lemon pepper sourness, menthol, bit of DMS, cherry liqueur finish. I like this, but I like the Boon part of this more than the New Belgium part, and it feels like the overall impact is sort of dampened, rather than augmented, by the blending.

Robe grenat, fine mousse. Nez sur la cerise, la griotte, note acidulée et finement boisée. Bouche à l’attaque fruitée, acidulée, fine bulle, de la fraîcheur, une finale acidulée. Bière agréable et bien faite.

Alarmingly red, like a pint of sparkling grape juice, with a vinous undertone to match. Crisp and full of bright cherry tartness, mostly dry with a modest sweet black cherry undertone bolstered by oak vanilla notes. Finishes a bit weak, tart but overly sparkly. Still tasty, though.

UPDATED: JAN 12, 2017 New Belgium sour ale based on traditional cherry lambic, as part of their Lips of Faith series. Bomber shared with Ster at Uncle Babe’s in Gent. Label - and the New Belgium website - mentions Oud Beersel as the supplier of the lambic involved in this one, rather than Boon as is mentioned above on this site... Thin, loose, dirty off-pinkish, lightly lacing head, hazy cherry red robe with amberish-brownish tinge. Lots of fresh cherries in the nose, fruit yoghurt, cherry pits, some stale sweat, sweet white grape, vague sherry, caramel, passion fruit and fermenting hay. Convincingly rich cherry pulp flavor in the onset, hints of purple gooseberry and very subtle passion fruit, spritzy carbonation, lean and smooth mouthfeel; sour but not puckering, rather a soft, sedate, accessible lactic tartness. This tartness continues over the middle and dries the palate in a gentle manner, at least compared with traditional cherry lambics; bit ’moelleux’ in the middle with a light caramelly malt base, sweetish underneath the tartness, fruity and juicy, dryingly tart finish with still vague traces of that soft caramelly sweetness lingering. Comes across as a hybrid between actual ’oude kriek’ lambic and cherry oud bruin, which is no surprise since it is basically a blend of Oud Beersel Oude Kriek with New Belgium’s own house sour Felix (which, if I understood correctly, is a kind of blonde counterpart of oud bruin, I guess roughly in the style of e.g. Petrus Aged Pale and the like in Belgium). Fairly clean, straightforward and perhaps lacking a bit in complexity to be internationally great, sour but in a mellow, tart, yoghurty and, as said, ’oud bruin’-like way, accessible and suitable as an introduction to sour cherry beers - a tasty introduction indeed, with still more than enough fruit acidity to be credible and authentic. Pleasant sour, in all.

Clear red with a pale head. Aroma is cherry pie, cherry candy. Light-medium bodied, tart and fruity on the palate, lightly dry and funky finish. Taste is cherry pie, cherries.

This beer is beautiful to look at, but it kind of lacks what I expected from it in taste and smell. It’s tart like a lambic should be, but it’s not as sweet as it looks, and it looks like the fruitest beer you can get your hands on. It’s a solid sour, but it’s not the best that New Belgium makes.

On tap at St. Augustine’s, pours a hazy ruby red with a small off-white head. Aroma brings out lots of sour cherries, cough drops and medium acidity. Flavour is dominated by sour and sweet cherries upfront, followed by moderate acidity. Not overly complex but pretty thorough on the tart cherries. Decent.

On tap at St. Augustine’s during New Belgium 25th anniversary celebration. Pours a clear cherry color with a slightly rose head. Aroma brings out lots of sweet and sour cherries. Taste is tart, sour cherries, slightly woody. Same character aftertaste. Excellent!
