3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Deep golden body with a thick white head that leaves nice lacing. Aroma is mostly pine and citrus with just a touch of malty sweetness. Full-bodied with moderate carbonation. The flavor is very well-balanced. Sweet caramel up front gives way to a grapefruit bite. A very smooth and drinkable pale ale.
From Mar 2008
It pours a clear gold with a 2 finger head of foam with lots of nice lacing and the head retention is first class as my final sips still have a ton of foam.
The smell is mostly of hops with notes of citrus and pine.
The taste follows the smell with good hoppiness in the form of grapefruit and pine. The malt is there as well with some bread, a little caramel, and some slight nuttiness but NB has really gone with the hops on this one and it works. The finish is definitely on the bitter side and it has a medium mouthfeel to it. Hmmm, I'm not used to drinking a hoppy brew from NB and it kind of threw me off but I think they did a pretty good job though after several sips, I'm bordering on saying, "is that it?" It's tasty enough for the style but it doesn't really stand out in any way. Maybe a second sample will change how I perceive this APA and if it does, I'll be sure to post an edit. Originally rated on 1/22/09. A different N.B. beer, funky but i kinda liked it. The pine aroma bordered on skunky but it was nice. Appearance was average with a mid yellow body, not much carbonation or head, but it did leave decent lace. Flavor of pine and an earthy malt base, nice balance, good aftertaste. Bright amber color with a taller cream colored head. Nice fresh hop aroma. Pine and citrus mix well with just a hint of caramel in the background. Light sweetness in the front. Green hops tea with just a hint of malt. Fairly thin and nearly to the point of being watery. A light APA in my book. 3/10

Found a bottle in the fridge. It’s over a year past the best by date of 6/15/14
Holds up pretty well for being so old.

12 oz bottle dated May 2011 served in pint glass (from notes)
Amber colored; clear even with trace sediment at bottom of bottle added; moderate but good lasting ivory head
S - fine fruity hops with malt background; would be higher if a bit stronger.
T - fruity hop mixture; caramel and pale malt, nicely balanced, although there’s a bitter hop hit in the finish. IBU = 34.
M - crisp, smooth and full; moderate/high carbonation.

Old rating. Solid pale. Grassy, slightly citrus, low bitterness, NB yeast taste. Nothing wrong but nothing spectacular. jookos (7160) - FINLAND - NOV 3, 2014
Bottle (backlog). Amber, strong hoppy, grassy citrusy nose. Quite bitter, medium bodied. Smooth bitter finish. Very ok. slowrunner77 (13226) - Reno, Nevada, USA - OCT 4, 2014
"another solid beer in the "regulars" of the NB line. lively but light hoppy aroma and flavor, with the honey sweetness coming out just enough - a little more in the flavor. great summer beer."

Pours a clear amber color with white head. Citrus and floral hop notes on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with some sweetness and caramel malt. BrownALEx (459) - Portland, Michigan, USA - MAY 5, 2014
Nice tasting pale ale with that signature New Belgium yeast taste. Part of a variety pack. Might get again.
