Editors note: in 2006, Skinny Dip replaced Loft as the name of New Belgiums low-alcohol, low-calorie summer seasonal (only minor changes in recipe; i.e. still approximately 4% ABV and spiced with Kaffir lime leaf).

Skinny Dip Description: New Belgiums Skinny Dip started out as a challenge from our founder Jeff to brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert. Jeff was looking for a full-bodied, highly drinkable beer for after workouts - something a little lighter than the rest of the portfolio. Peter, a Belgian, responded: Only in America would I be asked to brew a beer with no calories and less alcohol. The challenge was to give the beer body and complexity not usually found in beers at the lighter end of the spectrum. The result is Skinny Dip, a full-bodied beer that happens to weigh in at a crisp 114 calories per 12-ounce serving. Cascade hops frolic with a hint of lime leaf, making Skinny Dip a bright, refreshing splash for the summer season.

Loft Description: In a category all its own, Loft delivers an uplifting zest, a taut line of hoppiness, and, from integrated wheat and barley malt, a mouthful as big as the sky. Spiced with Kaffir lime leaves.

Very interesting beer. The light orange color is not dissimilar, I think, to their Mars beer (though I had them over a year apart...), but I digress. The nose can keep you occupied for a while, trying to identify the spices, fruits, and flowers that are contained therein. It is a very light beer, though not lacking in flavor. Citrus (orange and lime), spice, and a myriad other things going on here. Worth trying many times over to determine the constituent flavors; the lightness will preclude intoxication until well after the first 4 or 5 are gone.

Originally rated on 9/21/08. i consider myself a supporter and fan of New Belgium but this beer is a little below my expectations. It pours a mid to deep yellow body, not much carbonation leads to a small head. Aroma of citrus and malts. Mouthfeel is average, and flavor is rather bland with a hint of lime. Overall it was worth a try but N.B has so many better beers i probably wont try it again

Bottle. Clear gold color with a medium head. Aroma is kind of weak and bland. Taste has no lime and is like a regular everyday beer.

Sampled on tap at Black Bottle Brewery. Clear bronze appearance with a white head. Aroma of pilsner/pale malts, light citrus zest and light floral hops. The flavor adds a light hop bitterness and a toasted grain flavor. Light to medium body with a nice, clean malt feel. Easy to dirnk, solid lager overall.

12oz bottle pours with a crystal clear deep gold body that has copper hues and supports a thin near white head of foam. The mild aroma offers up hop spiciness and lime as well as faint spicy yeasty notes and a dash of sweet apple and pear. The taste starts with fairly crisp spicy to lime like hoppiness that carries a pleasing degree of hop bitterness. It then flows into faint cracker malts and then vaguely sweet apple like fruity esters.

At Riva in LT with Kara. A standard summer beer. Pours a clear golden color with white head. Grass and floral notes on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with a little malt backbone.
