Big thanks to Justin for this one.
Pours dark mahogany with some copper hints around the edges under a big creamy beige head that leaves nice lacing.
Aroma is fantastic. Tons of citrus - oranges, pineapples and white grapefruit, not to mention some pine hints. The black roasted malts are subtle but noticeable.
Taste doesn’t quite bring the citrus like the aroma with the initial taste having some oranges but there are equal parts chocolate malts and roasted notes. Finish is lightly bitter.
Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with strong carbonation.
Another excellent brew from New Glarus, a very balanced hoppy black ale in a style where subtlety and balance are not often appreciated. SPDickerman (1239) - Texas, USA - JUL 31, 2012
Pours dark red with a large tan head. Smells of grapefruit and caramelized or candied fruits. Taste is bitter with hints of sweetness. Medium-bodied with a slick texture and and mild mouth-carbonation, New Glarus Black Top finishes with some bitterness. msante79 (2225) - Mount Prospect, Illinois, USA - JUL 30, 2012
12oz bottle from Three Cellars. Pours dark brown with light tan head. Aromas of piney and earthy hops, roasted malts, and some chocolate. Flavors of pine, hop bitterness, light citrus, chocolate, and some roast. Very well balanced which is rare for this style. Expected nothing less from New Glarus. Bottle given to me by thebaldwizard. Dark brown pour with a thick beige head. Aroma of spicy and grassy hops with some roast. Malty and roasty flavor with a grassy hop finish. Dogbrick (13005) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - JUL 29, 2012
Thanks to Rogueone for sharing a bottle. Dark brownish-black with a touch of red around the edges. Medium tan head that dissipates steadily, and stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of toasted malt, pine and hops. Medium body with a resiny hops character and notes of grapefruit and caramel malt. The finish is very clean with a moderately bitter piney hops aftertaste. Solid Black IPA overall.

Bottle. Light nose, some hoppiness. Jet black pour, with thin light tan head. Love the taste. Well integrated hops with coffee and maltiness - nice black ipa that isn’t over the top. Good palate, lingers nicely. jcartamdg (3436) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 23, 2012
Pours jet black with a thick white head. Aroma of smokey malts and bitter hops. Taste borders on a hoppy stout, very nice not over the top just a well crafted beer

12oz bottle courtesy of GhostFace. It pours up brown with clear amber edges and a tan head that leaves behind light spotty lacing. The aroma offers up a pleasing rich load of pine hops and dank to spicy hops mixing with dark roasted malts. The taste is very similar where the hops take the flavor lead with a blending of dank to spicy hops to resiny pine hop goodness. Well behind the hops are murmurs of dark roasted malts and faint chocolate malts that grow a tad and then linger into the finish. Darn tasty, this. jcnielsen (3412) - Charlotte, North Carolina, USA - JUL 20, 2012
Bottle. Thanks to bnielsen13. Pours a black color with light cream head. Piney, grassy, roasted aromas. Malty, grassy flavors. STL_Drew (153) - Saint Louis, Missouri, USA - JUL 19, 2012
Nice brown head with a balance of hops, chocolate, and something fruity. This is an enjoyable beer.
