COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We invite you to discover this newest beer style Black IPA. Political debate rages over the origins of this jet black beer as both coasts feel they deserve credit. Our Black Top is a pleasant road connecting Villages and Communities statewide on a ride of Black IPA discovery. Expect this beer to pour a hop forward jet black glass brimming with aromatic bitterness. Brewmaster Dan skillfully weaves molasses and chocolate malt undertones with a soaring rush of clean citrus and pine hop notes, to deliver a drinkable Black IPA. Savor Black Top, like Wisconsins miles of licorice ribbons of ink that meander through armies of corn and bovine mowed fields. Enjoy the journey on a road less traveled.

12 oz. bottle, bonusd to me by ekoerper (thanks Ed), pours a deep dark brown / black with a medium foamy beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, spruce trees, and citrus and piney hops. Flavour brings out caramel and roasted malts upfront, a bit of chocolate, and a solid but slightly underwhelming citrus hop backing. Well-balanced, though perhaps slightly weak on the hop profile, or maybe Ive become jaded by these over-the-top black IPAs - it seems like more of a hoppy brown ale. Whatever it is, its well-constructed and highly drinkable. Great stuff.

Dark brown liquid with a moderately sized creamy light tan head. Scents of pine and mild citrus atop some roasted malt, mild dark chocolate and coffee. Light sweet start that leads to mild juniper and citrus. A return of roasted and toasted malt in the finish. Linger mix of malt and pine. Nice.

Sweet malty aroma with some blackstrap molasses. Deep cola brown, clear. Pleasant herbal notes over caramelized sugars. Rich but not chewy. Very drinkable. Thanks to the crowd down at Proof Production, from their stash.

Smell is piney and malty. Taste is equal parts roast, malt, and hops. I dont normally like IPAs, but this one is decent. It is important to note that the bottle was old.

New Glarus Black Top has a medium, cream colored head, a dark, reddish-brown, slightly hazy appearance, and heavy lacing left behind. The aroma is of sweet, grapefruit hop resin, and the flavor is of the same, with white bread, slight char, and low-to-moderate bitterness in the back of the sip. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and New Glarus Black Top finishes semi-dry and easily drinkable. RJT

bottle. Near black with one finger head. Malty base with very nice citrus hops that punch through. For the style, its quite excellent with solid flavor backbone.

On tap, poured into a sampler glass. Its rather citrusy (a bit unexpected for a black IPA) and grassy, with only a slight roasted note. Later, toffee starts to dominate and a light coffee and bread crust emerge to join the citrus and grass. Its a deep and dark, but clear mahogany color, with a very light, near-white, tan, dense head that leaves an abundant dense lace and retains a webbed surface and medium ring. The taste is a medium high bitter and medium sweet. The beer is a crisp beer, with a light fizz carbonation, an oily and a bit sticky texture, and a medium full body. There are burnt notes on the palate along with molasses, toast, raisin sweetness, and theres bitter rind and licorice at the finish. The aftertaste is dry with a bread crust flavor.
