Pours a near opaque chocolate amber. Big pillowy light tan head - subsides gradually to a thinner lace cap. Big aroma of chocolate banana. Flavors of moderately middle dark chocolate and banana with faint hint of cloves. The moderate effervescents pushes the flavors throughout the palate. Medium body. The almost imperceptible hops eliminates the potential for over sweetness - a balanced finish. I much prefer this to the Sam Adams Chocolate Bock, which was a bit too sweet. This is a beer that needs the right context to excel, not a session beer (unless you’re a chocoholic) - after dinner with fresh oranges... But for a foodie, this is a great asset. Nicely crafted.
Heavy milk chocolate smell. Taste is very chocolatey. Aftertaste is like an abbey ale with the chocolate still present. Great beer. GG (2332) - NorCal, California, USA - NOV 5, 2014
12oz bottle, courtesy of heybeerman
Just the thought of a New Glarus beer is enough to make the mouth of this California guy drool. When I saw this in the box as an extra from heybeerman, the kids scattered while I did the happy dance.
So the beer pours out dark, coca-cola brown body, cloudy with tight, clingy light tan head. The first aroma that hits me, chocolate. Like smelling a chocolate candy bar as you unwrap it. After it warms up a bit, the bubblegum is starting to show up. I didn’t get much more than those two components from the aroma, which was a minor disappointment. The flavor is on the lighter-side, compared to other dubbel’s out there. Very light chocolate, subtle plummy notes, toasted bread and a smidge of overripe banana. A very nice beer, lots of subtleties and the beer clearly doesn’t bonk you on the head with over-the-top profiles, but nor is it full of depth. Very solid. slowrunner77 (11930) - Reno, Nevada, USA - SEP 25, 2014
"Best of both worlds in this brew. Decadent chocolate in the nose and flavor. Not very sweet though. Bubble gum and Belgian spice, dry bittersweet finish. All the aspects of this work so well together. Thanks john and Travis for bringing this! Ibrew2or3 (8607) - Tempe, Arizona, USA - AUG 12, 2014
12oz bottle pours with a dark mahogany body that supports a thin tan head. The aroma offers up nice chocolate notes backed up by spiced figs, some juicy berry notes and a black pepper sense at the end of the draw. The taste is similar with plenty of chocolate bar goodness going on where date and fig and spiciness and mild black pepper notes murmur away underneath. This is a tasty brew that manages to somehow be a tad dry at the finish. Homer321 (5045) - Melboring, Florida, USA - JUL 19, 2014
Bottle. Nose is a ton of cocoa powder. Brown pour with a light white head. Chocolate comes through in the mid palate. Lightly bitter, but without much classis Dubbel character to the base beer. Pleasant.

Bottle thanks to Sean, shared at the Homer "welcome to california" tasting. Pours dark brown chestnut, medium tan head, a bit fizzy, nice residual lacing. Aroma is very chocolate, a bit of belgian spiciness. Medium sweet, light bitter, chocolate, yeast spicy esters. Medium body. Interesting. jackl (8029) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - MAR 30, 2014
Bottle, cheers to Drake for gifting this. The pour’s deep reddish brown. The tiny off-white head fizzles out pretty quickly. Not particularly attractive. Plenty of chocolate malts, cocoa powder aromas. Hints of tangy red berry. Some Belgian yeast, toasty brown sugar. Mellow oxidized flavors. Some toasted tobacco. Thin and slightly ashy. Faded raspberries dipped in chocolate. Dry finish. Some tart bubblegum. Medium body, quite fizzy. Overall, a few ounces were more than enough. tastybeer (1853) - Indiana, USA - DEC 2, 2013
Bottle, courtesy Brigadier, thanks! Pour is ruby, tan head, decent retention/lace. Aroma of milk chocolate, fruity ester, dark fruit. Taste is chocolate, fruity ester, dark fruit, light clove. Palate is soft, slick, sweet finish. olr1984 (1500) - fort wayne, Indiana, USA - NOV 25, 2013
12oz bottle thanks to Neal. Pours a dark brown with a tan head. Big chocolate malt aroma. Taste is the same. alexsdad06 (10284) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - SEP 1, 2013
12 oz. bottle shared with the group early 2012. Pours a clear copper brown color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have some sweet malts, powdery dark chocolate, yeast, mild fruit notes and a very light nutty component. Interesting, a bit soft at the finish.
