Not really what I expected from a scotch ale. Aroma was kind of bland, a little cinnamon and spices. Taste is sweet with toffee and caramel. It’s not a bad beer, just not what I expected from a scotch ale drewbeerme (3921) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JAN 21, 2014
pours hazy golden with white head. aroma is odd, lots of spices cinnamon and cloves. flavors has a lot of cinnamon coming at you, some caramel from the malts, really just a mess of a beer, something a bad homebrewer would make so I’m very surprised this is coming from Dan Carey. 12 oz bottle and served in snifter: Pours a mahogany hue with a nice frothy head and lace. The aroma has notes of toffee, fruitcake, figgy pudding, sea salt, flowery and earthy yeast esters. The taste is quite malty and somewhat sweet with a dash of smoke and salt. The mouth feel is surprisingly sprite which helps cut the sweetness, shorter than expected finish. I would hard pressed to call this a Scotch Ale, more akin to a English styled Strong Ale. Still overall it is very quaffable, thanks Joe Popeck for the bottle. Bottle. Hard to call this a Scotch Ale...Light Orange in color, with aromas of dried fruit- apricot and cherries. Some spicy yeast in there too. Taste is hot, with the alcohol noticeable right away. More dried fruit, sweet and malty. Toffee and caramel towards the end. More apricot too. More like a Dubbel than a Scotch. This is good, flavorful, and well made, despite the label... jcnielsen (3416) - Charlotte, North Carolina, USA - DEC 25, 2013
Bottle in Vail. Thanks to adnielsen for sharing. Pours an orange color with white head. Malty, caramel, wood flavors. Meh, one of the lower end New Glarus beers.

Bottle thanks to Skyview: Reddish caramel, moderate foamy sandy head, fairly nice lacing. Sweet bready aroma, some biscuit, but also some alcohol. Appears to also have an unripened fruitiness too. Somewhat of a weird one in that its more fruity than smokey or peaty. Very bready and fruity, but not all that bright. This really is a weird one, as it doesn’t have the peaty/smokey aspect to it. Body and mouthfeel are fairly full, chewy too. However, its more fruity and bready than any other Scotch Ale I have had. Slightly mealy on the finish. Tiz okay, and certainly different. revtork (11) - North Prairie, Wisconsin, USA - DEC 21, 2013
A lighter scotch probably shouldn’t be named "Winter Warmer." This scotch ale doesn’t stick to your gills the way others do, despite the over-the-top packaging with foil and the like. You’ll do better with Founders or Three Floyds Scotches. And this is coming from a Wisconsinite! (New Glarus is overrated in just about every category. Go to Tyranena’s Brewers Gone Wild for the best in what Wisconsin has to offer). fattybladdy (830) - Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA - DEC 21, 2013
12oz bottle, appearance is a cloudy brownish amber with tall head. Nice mild aroma of apple and caramel. Taste is light apple, caramel and spice. Not at all what you would expect with a name like winter warmer, it’s actually fairly light tasting and really easy to drink. Aging it for a bit may have taken the edge off, as there is no detectable alcohol. Overall quite the unique and enjoyable brew. cubs (10721) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - NOV 22, 2013
Bottle @ home, courtesy of arminjewell. Thanks! Gusher! Pours a bit hazy, reddish orange appearance with a cream colored head. Cola, caramel, orange fruity, toffee aroma. Heavily carbonated. Kind of chewy, cardboard/paper, toasted malty, caramel, a bit goopy, slightly herbal flavor that finishes with a bit of citrus. This sure hasn’t held up well based on this bottle. arminjewell (9720) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - NOV 22, 2013
UPDATED: AUG 8, 2014 Rerate: Pour out of 12 oz bottle, big thanks to Jeff! Much less cardboard, nice caramel, toffee, dark plum, red fruits, no cardboard. Tasty.
Pour out of 12 oz bottle, dark orange red pour with off white head, aroma brought notes of caramel, toffee, hints of cola in there, touch of earth, slight spice, some cherry juice. Taste is a mix of dark fruit, cola, hints of dark caramel, lots of cardboard, hints of spice, finishing fairly sweet, slightly dry.
