Flemish monks brewed the first Abt. A voluptuous temptress they named for their Monastery Abbot. Belgian Dark Candi Sugar encourages the decadence of rum, raisin dark chocolate and sherry like fruit tones to conspire happily in almost 20˚ Plato. Rich and full bodied this is one to lie down or if you are bold enjoy now, but take your time - linger. This beer cries to be sipped and enjoyed.

UPDATED: NOV 21, 2014 3/2013 - Pours deep garnet brown. Brief tan head. Aroma of caramelized banana and raisons, hints of chocolate. On the tongue, add a hint of ginger spice to the mix. Silky on the palate, well balanced, a hint of fizz as you swallow. Medium body, with a medium finish. Finesse - doesn?t show-off, doesn?t dominate - like a fine Bordeaux compared to a fine California Cab. Props to New Glarus.11/2014 - Set aside a bottle from 2013. Still excellent. Description still holds up. Possibly a bit lighter on the palate. More dried fruit - calimyrna figs. Still complex but subtle.

Bottle thanks to TheAlum. Pours hazy reddish mahogany, small beige head, dissipates with decent lacing. Aroma is dried fruits, malts and a weird kind of rotten fruit aroma. Flavor is prunes, dried fruits, malts, hints of toffee, sherry, hints of belgian yeasts. Medium body, a bit watery in feel. Not bad, but the rotten fruit thing is offputting.

JPDIPSO (6298) - Wauwatosa, USA - JUL 28, 2015
Mahogany with hints of ruby. Diminishing off-white head, that leaves just a small island and a ring around the glass. Fairly light aromas, with some herbal hops and fruity malt. A nice scent, just a bit subdued. Light, yet rich in feel. A very soft, yet tight carbonation. Light sweet start, with caramel, darker berries, and toasted malt. Not an overpowering mix of flavors, just a nice blend. It’ll be interesting to see how this one lays down. It’s already balanced and mellow. 4/10

Homer321 (5248) - Melboring, Florida, USA - JAN 1, 2015
Bottle. Aroma is dried fruit, stone fruit, munich malt, dustiness. Slight bit of alcohol noted as well. Pour is murky brown with a small off white head. Taste is pruney and fruit roll up, with an alcohol warming in the chest. Slight oxidation in a mix of paper and sherry, but doesn’t affect the mouthfeel that greatly. Pretty solid, but probably would have been more enjoyed fresher.

BiiruBierBeer (1059) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - OCT 24, 2014
Aroma is old cardboard and caramel malt. Taste is pretty much the same with some malty doppelbock notes in there. Low to medium sharp carbonation.

[Bottle] Deep reddish brown color with little head. Nose is spicy and yeasty. Dark fruit, raisin, brown sugar and clove all make an appearance. Toffee, darker fruits, rum, clove, sweet breads and hints of alcohol in the state. Decent palate. Taste is a little muddled at times, but it’s still a good beer. Tasting notes from 2012.

Mörkbrun och klar. Inget skum. Doft av godis, kola. ganska komplex doftbild som för tillfället känns ogreppbar. Mer åt barleywine-typ. Ganska hög kolsyra. Åldrats med värdighet. Kola dominerar smakbilden.

valpoaj (755) - Valparaiso, Indiana, USA - JAN 2, 2014
Pours a deep, translucent garnet with a film of a tan head. Aroma is surprisingly faint - candied sugar, caramel, vanilla, but this didn’t open up much, even upon warming. Flavor is pretty good, sugary malts, raisin, plum, caramel, hint of booze. Palate is smooth and easy drinking. Given my high standards for NG, this one fell a bit short, though it was still a good drink that I look forward to having again.

Bottle thanks to adnielsen ! Pours a deep mahogany color with a finger of eggshell foam. The nose is filled with belgian candi sugar, flat cola and a trace of herbal earthiness. The palate follows with lots of dark earthy character that balances nicely of the background gingerbread, burnt sugar and cola. Traces of anise, wet wood, vanilla and charcoal linger. Complex and tasty !

Few year old bottle, pours very dark brown with ruby hue. Nose candy sugar, molasses, raisin, slight booze. Taste sweet up front, Belgian candy sugar, some raisin and faint spice. Decent mouthfeel for old bottle.
