Bottle shared by a friend. From notes. Loads of toffee, caramel, dark fruits and a little woody hints in the end.

Clear dark brown with light tan head. Good carbonation that dies down quickly. Aromas of dark fruits, caramel, raisins and vanilla. Incredible explosion of flavors with some burn still after six months but much mellower than when it first came out. Nice hop presence still up front and balances nicely. Very drinkable for such high alcohol.

Thanks to Stowehop (one more souvenier from a great trade). 12 oz bottle. I’ve been wanting to try this one for a long time. Poured with great anticipation into my Duvel tulip. A moderately aggressive pour produces a beautiful deep dark ruby red beer tinged with hints of brown around the edges. Topped with a thin white collar of foam that dissipates rather quickly. On the nose this one is very inviting, offering great promise of living up to the beer I imagined it might be. The nose offers an intoxicating mix of vintage port, dry sherry, caramel and loads of toffee. As it warms bits of dark fruit become evident, blending well with the first signs of the massive amounts of alcohol contained within. Candied oranges and big juicy hops manifest themselves initially on the palette, although the sherry (along with very evident alcohol and a slight cardboard note) become much more prevalent as this one warms. Big, thick, rich and chewy with a lasting bitter finish. Finally got to try this one and it definitely lived up to my outsized expectations.

12oz bottle. I had no idea this was 13.5% from the label. Deep amber-brown color. Soapy non-head. Big dark fruit Barleywine aroma, pleasantly warm. Lots of woody vanilla, and some sherry in the background. Sweet and more pleasant on the palate than most beers half it’s strength. This is truly excellent stuff. The alcohol is a little present in the aftertaste, some lingering warmth for sure. Recommended.

bottle, pours deep mahogany with a medium off white head. Aroma isvery complex and sweet smelling. Apple skin, bready malts, and some hops. Taste is BIG. Lots of sweet malt notes, some peppery spice and a nice hop bitterness ending with a lingering hot alcohol burn, but I like it. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel.

Unplugged Iced Barley Wine Sampled on 7/31/10. This barley wine pours a light to medium amber color from a 12oz bottle. Little to no head. The aroma is fruity and sweet, caramel, with just a hint of oxidation. A medium to full bodied Barley Wine. The malts are caramel, fruity and sweet. The hops are earthy. Nice carbonation. Very smooth tasting. Nice balance. Intense malt flavors with just a touch of oxidation. This bottle is probably at least 2 to 3 years old. Nice beer. A touch of alcohol bite at the finish, but considering its 13.5% not bad. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet with a touch of alcohol bite.
