Bottle. I enjoyed this. Brown pour with medium head and no retention. Nose is malty with lots if caramel but nicely light on the smoke. Taste gets you the same but also the rye malt comes through. Very sweet and chewy. I would like a couple morebof these for the season. lithy (2996) - Capital of Appalachia, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 16, 2011
An amber-brown with a whitish cover, I didn’t managed to stop the pour before a couple very large chunkies fell in, but the majority of the sediment remained compacted on the bottom of the bottle. The aroma is caramel, some oxidation, faint paper smoke, and a touch of rye spiciness. The taste is smokier, spicier, while the peppery rye and alcohol poke through alongside a bit of oxidation. The majority of the body is sweet caramels though. This one is showing its age, would love for them to redo this on soon since I loved the Smoked Rye Ale. mikem409 (2026) - bloomfield, Michigan, USA - NOV 22, 2011

UPDATED: SEP 6, 2010 Bottle from JCapriotti...thanks Jason! - Huge chunks of...mmm...yeast?-...come out of the bottle upon pouring. Deep amber with a small white head. Had to strain this to even drink it. Smell is like smoked meat and peat...nice and smoky with a decent amount of sharp heat. Sweet and smoky taste, with a real sweet meat flavor. A decent amount of rye, but there’s a little graininess that comes through. A bit muted, but the smokiness keeps everything in check. Syrupy and smooth. Very nice. nimbleprop (8377) - SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA - JUL 12, 2010

Lightly smoky nose, with a fair amount of rye bread, some caramel. Moderately sweet, lightly bitter, bit of rye, some smoke, some toffee and dark fruit. Decent. shigadeyo (3739) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - MAY 28, 2010

2/24/2010: New Glarus Unplugged Smoked Rye Bock... Aroma: Subtle dry smoke; toasted bark and twigs. Appearance: Hazy, deep golden color; fleeting light beige head; ample carbonation considering the age on this brew. Flavor: Lightly bright hoppy, thin toffee; reminds me of a Helles Bock with a bit of smoke; faint smoke - maybe more like caramelized corn on the cobb; slightly metallic and alcoholic in the finish; on the sweeter side overall. Palate: Medium-light to medium; soft body; chunkies in the bottle... Overall: Okay, not great; most likely a bit past it’s prime; I really really hoping for something great due to the combination of rye and smoke; oh well, maybe this will come out again and then I can try in fresh.
12 fl. oz. bottle (twist-off cap) from awaller05 via trade. Thanks Andy! Rating #145 for this beer.
Bottle from a trade with RIBRomeo. Pours cloudy caramel color with cream colored head. Dark fruit and caramel aromas with a touch of smoke. Sweet caramel, overripe dark fruit and spicy rye flavors with mild smokiness. I was hoping for a little more smoke. Medium body with moderate carbonation and a syrupy mouthfeel. I had no idea it was a 12% ABV beer until I looked it up. Alcohol was very well hidden. Thanks Chuck. Tmoney99 (14460) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - MAR 9, 2010
Bottle shared by shigadeyo. Poured clear copper color with an average light brown frothy head that was mostly diminished with fair lacing. Moderate smoke malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium sweet smoke flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. This older bottle did not meet my expectations.

20060128 12oz bottle thanks to Captain Cougar. Golden amber, thick looking, full of specks and hazed, with creamy white head that lasts. Bolstered by some visible eff. Aroma is mostly estery and grassy with low hops but lots of ripe grain. Some mild smoke, peat and oak, but extremely mild. Palate is thick, creamy, full feeling. Light sweetness, fresh and grassy, light clove, and only mild oak smoke. Would have appreciated a smokier effort.
