3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
aroma is malty sweet, only hints of smoke or even roast. barley present, not even what i would consider ’subtle’. appearance is maple glaze, nil head albeit satisfying carb. flavor is maple syrup, sweet, low pork, malty with teaser of smoke can almost not be credited as intentional. mouthfeel is initially satisfying then thin later. i dont need a full blown rauchbier everytime i see ’smoke’ in the description but a little more then this would be nice.
Draft on tap at Tribes (Mokena, IL). Pours a rich ruby pour, reddish copper with just a touch of haze. Frothy cakey tannish head sits atop, dies to a bigger film, laces well and sticks around. Aromas are a gentle breakfast sausage meaty and sweet feel, touches of maple, flaked wheat, carmelized malts. Solid smoke, sweeter and more campfire focused. Wood, maple syrup, and hickory. Gentle toffee and toast. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied offering a touch of malt up front and quickly basking into a campfire meaty bliss. Sweet maple falls way back as bacon and sausage become the mode, though not overbearing. Decent to solid smoke presence mixes with toast and bread, some biscuits and touches of caramel. Middle lingers smokey campfire meats, simple to the point, but quite lovely for a smokey beer person. Finish is lingering smoke, campfire and touches of wood, meaty yet as I said before, nothing overbearing that would make this strictly a smokehead’s brew (though admittedly, I am a Smokehead). Simple but the flavors mesh so well, making this a very enjoyable experience. A touch sweeter than expected, but the smoke is sufficient for most (But a little light for me).
